"I did not intend to come here."
Haruki said nothing. Renji realised what he had admitted. He had not intended to come. He had still brought two coffees. Haruki did not turn the fact into a question. That restraint created a strange warmth beneath Renji's ribs.
He looked at Haruki's folded coat on the bench.
"You are not wearing yours."
"I was warm."
"You are no longer."
"Probably not."
"Then your concern is hypocritical."
"Yes."
Renji waited. Haruki continued watching the city. No defence. No teasing. Only agreement. Renji found it disorienting.
He set his coffee beside Haruki's. Then crossed to the bench. Haruki watched him lift the coat.
"You don't need toβ"
Renji placed it over Haruki's shoulders. The sentence ended. The coat retained the shape and warmth of Haruki's body. Renji adjusted the collar, his hands briefly touching the sides of Haruki's neck.
Haruki looked at him. Close. Still. Renji could have kissed him. The awareness passed between them without urgency. Neither moved. This was not that kind of moment. Renji lowered his hands. Haruki pulled the coat around himself.
"Thank you."
Renji returned to the railing.
"You would have become ill."
"I've stood outside in worse."
"That does not make it advisable."
"No."
Again, no argument. Renji looked at him.
"Are you tired?"
"Yes."
"You should rest."
"So should you."
"I will."
"When?"
"Later."
Haruki nodded as though that were an adequate answer. It was not. He simply lacked the energy to challenge it. The fatigue showed more clearly now β his face had lost the alert stillness he wore around the Family, his posture had softened, one hand remained wrapped around the coffee, not drinking, merely holding the heat.
Renji had seen Haruki exhausted before β injured, frustrated, angry. He had not seen him like this. Quiet without vigilance. Daisuke had survived. For a few hours, there was no decision Haruki needed to make. No order to give. No person waiting for him to become certain.
