“Thank you!”
I hugged her back before kissing the top of her head.
“Now…”
I gently turned her toward the bedroom door.
“Next lesson.”
She looked up at me, giving me her undivided attention.
“When Mommy and Daddy got the door closed, you knock first.”
“But y’all wasn’t doing nothing,” she frowned.
Eternity burst out laughing. I looked at my daughter.
“That doesn’t matter. What did I say?”
Maylee stared at me for another second before shrugging.
“Okay…”
Then she skipped right back out of the room and closed the door behind her. Suddenly, I heard two little knocks.
Knock. Knock
“Daddy?”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Come in.”
She cracked the door open just enough to smile.
“I love you.”
“I love you too, baby.”
She closed the door again, and a second later we heard her running down the hallway. I looked over at Eternity.
“You are laughing too damn hard. She almost walked into some shit.”
She wiped a tear from the corner of her eye.
“I can’t help it. You handled that pretty good.”
“I had to.”
I slipped my arm around her waist again and then bit my bottom lip as I pulled her close.
“Now, where was I?”
Chapter 22
Maliah
By the time I pulled into Tahari’s apartment complex, the sun was beginning to settle behind the trees. My backpack sat in the passenger seat beside my overnight bag. Both made me smile a little. A lot could change in a few months. There was a time when seeing Tahari meant making sure nobody from my family saw us together. I’d sneak out of the house, make up excuses about where I was going, and pray Daddy didn’t ask too many questions. Now, my parents knew exactly where I was. Before getting out of the car, I grabbed my phone.
