The phone had disconnected from my car, and decided I wanted to keep listening through its speakers.

Jake groaned. I dove between the car seats, ignoring how my breasts pushed against his arm. I reached for my bag and dug in it until I found my phone.

"Fucking you is heaven, Romina. I always knew it would be. My hard cock in your wet, sweet pus—"

I turned it off.

My car had never felt so small, and my face had never felt so warm. Jake had an arm firmly set on his lap; the other, elbow on the window ridge, held his hanging head. A rueful smile curled his lips, and he shook his head.

"That was…" he tried, but words seemed to fail him.

He stared at me, and the hint of humor in his eyes released me from the tension wrapping around me.

I snorted. He chuckled. A short laugh followed, and soon we both cackled together in my car.

"Wow. Talk about breaking the ice," I said when I could put a sentence together.

"That was—" he started again but, this time, I interrupted him.

"That was smutty deliciousness from my romance book."

"I was going to sayunexpected." He grinned. "But I think listening to music might be a better idea."

"What? You're not going to tease me about it? Or ask for more?"

He shook his head and stared out the windshield. "Nope. Neither of those."

He turned on the radio and let whatever was on play. The arm on his lap stayed in place. If he was hiding an erection, it could be for many reasons. It didn't mean he wanted to re-enact the audiobook with me. Or maybe he did, and I had his epic restraint to blame for my lonely nights.

Well, that and the fact I was one of his bosses, technically.

I maneuvered the car out of the parkade. "That's okay. Though, once upon a time, you would have made fun of it."

"I would have laughed at the moment more— how shocked we both were for a second. I wouldn't have mocked you for your books."

I frowned as I took the street toward home. I didn't hide my romance books, and I had been reading them since I was a teen. He had to have known I read romance novels, and he had never made a comment about it. Most of my boyfriends had, in one way or another.

"I suppose that's true. In any case…" I interrupted myself by biting my lip.

We stopped at a red light and he gazed at me. I gazed right back, my hands wrapping hard around the wheel.

"What?" He cocked his head. "What were you going to say?"

I shrugged and let out a self-deprecating huff. "Nothing. Only that I missed laughing with you."

His curious look morphed into a mix of tenderness and sadness. "That's not nothing."

The light turned green, and I continued the drive through city traffic. People walked the sidewalks and crossed the streets in their office regalia, ready for happy hour, or a meet up with a friend. Or a date.

Without any more words, he changed the radio station and I drove us to my parents' for dinner.

Chapter 4

Jake

It had taken thewhole drive for my erection to subside. Not only had the audiobook put more images in my head that I knew what to do with, but the car was full of her— from the simple resin charm hanging from her rearview mirror, with a pressed violet in it; to her perfume infiltrating every corner. It had been months since we'd been this close, and it got to me.

Dinner at her parents' house was a common affair, but that night's meal had a different feeling to it. Ever since I was eight years old and I spent as much time with the Sotomayors as I could, they'd shown me what an affectionate family looked like… but due to my own family, I had learned to read the vibe in every situation. Tonight's meal had an unusual energy hiding in the corners.
