Ale: what's going on? Is she okay?
Max: she has a fever and is tired. I'm letting her sleep.
Ale: She mentioned this could happen but didn't think it would be this bad. Ok, thanks for letting me know. I'll take over at rEvalution. Take care of her and let me know if you need anything
Max: thank you, I will.
I gazed at Eva, to discover her eyes were half open, glassy, and fixed on me.
I put a hand on her shoulder. "How are you feeling?"
"Like shit. What time is it?"
"Just rest. I got Ale to help. You can take the day off."
She closed her eyes again. "You're sweet sometimes. How dare you."
I snorted and squeezed her shoulder. "I'll come check on you often. For now go back to sleep."
She didn't respond, and I left as quietly as I could. For a guy who spoke and lived loud, I could move like a spy if I wanted to.
I showered and, since I would stay home that day with Eva, I put on my robe instead of clothes. I didn't want to work from the tiny desk in the guestroom, so I set up at the dinner table. If I sat in one specific corner and left Eva's door open, I could see her sleeping the morning away.
That's how I saw her wake up. I went to check on her.
"What time is it?" she asked again.
"Almost noon."
"Noon?!" she groaned and attempted to sit up.
"Shh, it's okay. Ale is at rEvalution."
"Right." She frowned and continued to try to sit up.
I put an arm around her shoulders and helped her. "Do you want some tea? A book?"
She gave me a long look. "That sounds good."
"If you're hungry, I can make toast. If you'd like something better, I can make a quick run to the café and get us something better."
"Tea and toast is good. Thank you."
I caressed her face. "Be right back."
I hadn't eaten anything yet so I made food for the both of us, plus tea. I was pretty confident I wouldn't get sick, but I addedhoney and lemon to mine as well just in case. Also because it was delicious.
I looked for a tray everywhere. I couldn't find one; I brought the tea to the room and left the cups and plate on her night stand.
"You don't have a tray, do you, darling?"
"I don't. I've lived alone for a long time. Why would I need one?"
"Nevermind." I sat next to her legs and tapped away on my phone. "I'll get us a couple of options delivered."
"We're going to run out of space faster if you keep buying things." She rubbed her forehead.
"Good thing my realtor already connected with the office holding the Venturelli papers. We can get the key whenever; it's at Town Hall."
