We gazed at each other some more.
With a gesture of his head, he broke the spell and invited me to sit next to him on the bed. "Come. Let me show you our wedding."
I sat next to him on the bed. He held the phone in front of us and pressed play. I leaned in to watch.
It seemed like a standard ceremony video, perhaps a fixed camera somewhere in the chapel. Max and I stood next to each other, centered on the image. We could see the officiant standing in front of us, his profile visible, but we were the stars. A fourth person stood behind us, hidden by Max and I. Probably the lawyer.
Not much of the place was visible. From the empty space framing Max and I, the walls appeared a simple white with gold accents.
Past Max said something and Past Me cackled so hard that she bent over. It let me see the person standing behind us; they watched us with a smirk.
"That's Chris, one of my lawyers. He was our witness."
"Get on with it," Chris said in the video. "And go straight to the good bits."
Past Eva held a bouquet of flowers and Past Max held her, laughing and helping her keep her balance.
The officiant ignored us and started the ceremony. "We are gathered here to witness the union of Eva Medina and Maximiliano Errázuriz. I, ah... well. The good bits. Do we have any vows by the bride and groom?"
Past Max stared at Past Eva, a smile on his face. "I vow to never drink like this again."
Past Me laughed. "I vow to that, too!"
The officiant seemed like he wanted to interrupt us, perhaps to remind us to take turns with our vows. He shook his head and let us continue.
"I vow to be good to you," Past Max said. A bright, tender smile stretched on his face. "I vow to do everything I promised."
He patted his pocket on the video.
"I think I was talking about the original prenup," Max explained. "I wrote it on a napkin; we both signed it. My lawyers are working on that now, to make it proper."
I nodded, my eyes still on the small screen of his phone. His smile on the image drew me in. Nothing cheeky in it, like everything I'd seen tonight. The tenderness on the screen caught my breath.
Except that Past Me didn't seem to notice.
Past Eva grinned full of humor. "I vow to be a good partner in this endeavor and do my share."
"I won't be with anyone else," Max added. "Only you."
"Only you." Past Me nodded.
Both our smiles intensified in the video.
"Good," the officiant said. "Now, Maximiliano. Do you take Eva to be your lawfully wedded wife, and promise to cherish her and love her, with trust and respect, forsaking all others, and doing as you vowed, for as long as you walk the same path together?"
Past Max eyes softened on Past Me. "I do."
"Eva," the officiant continued. "Do you take Maximiliano to be your lawfully wedded husband, and promise to cherish him and love him, with trust and respect, forsaking all others, and doing as you vowed, for as long as you walk the same path together?
Past Eva lifted the bouquet in a celebratory gesture. "I do!"
Max laughed—both past and present.
"Do we have rings?" The officiant asked in the video.
Chris spoke from behind us. "Not today. Go ahead and do the pronouncement."
Chris moved to the front next to the officiant, and pointed his phone in our direction.
