"That sounds nerve-wracking."

"I'll be fine. We'll be fine. It's going to be okay."

I smiled. "Good. I already emailed your designer to add the bench to the walk-in shower."

That made him grin. "Which reminds me— I'm going to take a shower now. You know what's going to happen? My back is going to sting, I'm sure of it. Not to say anything about the shoulder bites."

"Good." I grinned. "That way you'll keep thinking of me."

"There's no risk I wouldn't, darling."

Chapter 32

Max

The following morning, Marlene, her team, and I flew to Toronto and worked from her offices there. Eva and I texted with each other through the day, and talked again before I got back in bed. The same the next day.

We were prepared to do it all over again on the fourth day, when we received notice that my father had sent a small team to Laguna Island.

"He must be going for my investments and donations over there," I told Marlene.

"Everything we've checked is above board," she replied. "It doesn't make sense."

"You were the one to remind me he's ruthless, no?" I pursed my lips. "I should go there and run interference."

"Take my jet." André, the second Board member I had been working with, made a gesture toward one of his assistants. "We don't want to give Carlos any kind of advantage."

I rushed to pack my things again and, once in the car to the airport, I texted a bunch of people back in Laguna Island.

Max: Daniel, please let me know if anyone from my father's team comes into town. They may try to talk to you or someone else in town hall. Please stall them.

Max: Ale, I don't have Pri's number. Can you ask her to let you know if she hears of anyone strange in town? My dad is sending people over.

Max: Lucas, if you see anyone around asking about my deals with you and others, please let me know.

And finally, the message I got to savor.

Max: Darling, I'm coming home.

Once I landed at the nearest airport, I drove back home at a speed slightly over the limit. Returning to Laguna Island so soon didn't appease my anxiety. On one hand, my gut screamed that this is when I'd discover what my father's plans were. On the other, I couldn't wait to sleep with Eva again.

An hour later, I parked at town hall. Just in case, I took my tiny folded napkin shield and hid it in my waistcoat pocket. Next, I took my phone out.

Max: I'm back. Daniel texted to say my dad's people are in his office with Hernán. Wait for me at rEvalution. I'll come to help you close

Eva: I'll wait for you

The first person I saw upon getting into the building was Janet. She stood by the reception desk, hectic energy around her.

"I stalled them as much as I could," she told me. "Hernán was the worst of them all. They're all with Daniel in the boardroom now."

"Thank you so much. Can I…?" I pointed in the direction of the meeting room.

"I'll go with you. It'll look more official that way." She rounded the desk. "Not that I'm intimidating in any way, but if I can help even a little…"

I smirked as she let me in the boardroom. Four people turned to stare at me.
