I hung up before he could say anymore. He almost convinced me that he was oblivious to everything, but he couldn’t be. Could he?

I sat there for a moment, watching my phone ring before it finally stopped. About fifteen seconds later, there was a knock at the door then I heard Alysia’s voice.

“I’m sorry for bothering you, ma’am. Mr. Carter requested that I wake you for brunch if you missed breakfast,” she said from outside the door.

“Uh, okay. I’ll be down.”

“Okay.”

I was halfway through getting dressed when Amethyst called and asked if I wanted company. She and Karsyn were in the neighborhood after shopping to design Karsyn’s condo. I agreed considering there was only so much time a girl could spend alone.

“So, tell me about him. Spill.” Amethyst’s voice filled the foyer as she and Karsyn entered the house. I was already seated at the kitchen table, attempting to scarf down a good amount of the mini feast Hondo made sure was prepared for me.

“There is nothing to tell.” Karsyn said before her eyes found me. She walked over to hug me then looked back at Amethyst.

“Nothing to tell about what?” I quizzed.

“The guy she’s messing with. Are you feeding us too?”

Karsyn shook her head. “I’m not messing with anyone. It happened a few times but that’s it.”

“Yes. I can’t eat all of this by myself. And what do you mean it happened a few times?”

“We met at this club in Water Town. Well maybe not met, but there was a shooting and he kind of saved me.”

“Pause. What the hell were you doing over there?” Amethyst asked, sliding into the breakfast nook next to me.

“Getting some air. It’s so stuffy out here.”

“So he saved you and what?” I decided to ask the right question.

Karsyn laughed like a schoolgirl. “We talked and got to know one another. Then we went back to my place… and yeah. That’s happened a few times.”

I laughed. “Are you gonna see him again?”

“I don’t know. He keeps telling me we’re from different sides, but I question why that should matter. Why does what side we’re from matter?”

Amethyst nodded. “I get that. Who is he?”

Karsyn spooned yogurt into her mouth with the most nervous expression. “You probably don’t know him.” When she spoke, her mouth was full.

The way her eyes bulged and shifted from side to side was a clue that the name was definitely known.

Amethyst shrugged. “Okay, what’s his name?

“Posydiann.”

Amethyst’s eyes bulged at the mention of the name. I didn’t know the name, so I was stuck looking back and forth until somebody said something else or at least clued me in on who this Posydiann was.

“Water Town god Posydiann? Fur coat in the function Posydiann? Posydiann who is in charge of the Waterboys and in a turf war with your father right fucking now?” Amethyst said all in one breath and had me keyed in.

Karsyn shook her head. “How do you even know all of that?”

“Because I too have taken a step on the wild side. Not with that one, but baby I know things.” I tilted my head to the side, intrigued.

“And how do you know things?”

“Because I be around.” She grinned, causing a fit of laughter to travel through the room.
