“They don’t want closure.”
“Then there’s nothing to talk about.I’ve got to go.Take care.”She hung up on him, yelling at her to stop.
She lay her forehead against the wall next to her.“I have to put a stop to it before it destroys me.I can’t handle any more rejection in my life,” she murmured to herself.
Chapter Sixteen
The steam from theshower filled the small bathroom.Jayla stood inside the shower until the water started to cool.
The heater in this bathroom wasn’t as good as the other hotel, but at least it was putting out some heat. She knew it was emotional distress that made her feel so bad, but she couldn’t remember being this cold inside. It wasn’t a cold that made her shiver, but it drew out any energy she’d had.
Jayla had decided to take a day and relax, and use it to determine where she would go.She bent forward over the counter and wiped a hand across the mirror, dispelling some of the moisture so she could see herself.Even wet, the haircut she’d gotten was noticeable, but she liked it.A different haircut for a different life.
She was dragging by the time she had her hair mostly dry and her flannel nightgown on.Maybe tonight she’d be able to get some sleep. She opened the bathroom door.A scream tore from her throat before she could stop it.The men lounging around her room didn’t even flinch.Beau was sitting up on the headboard of the bed with one foot on the floor. He looked like he hadn’t slept in days, but he also tried to mask the anger a bit. They both hadn’t shaved and looked like a full beard was going to grow before long.
Diego leaned against the door, his ankles crossed, and was cleaning his nails with a very wicked-looking knife. He didn’t even try to mask his fury.
She couldn’t deal with them. Her emotions were too close to the surface.“What are you doing here? How did you find me?”
“We tracked you from the courthouse,” Beau commented.
“Why?”
Diego actually flinched.“You’re asking us why?”
Jayla crossed her arms as if it would help hold herself together when all she wanted to do was fall apart.“Yes.I’d like that answered, and then I’d like you to leave.”
Diego’s eyebrows went up, and he looked at Beau.Beau shook his head at Diego because he knew he wanted to spank her ass red, but they still had a few things to overcome.“I can’t believe you feel you have to ask us.”
Jayla’s control started slipping, and she was terrified she wouldn’t get it back anytime soon.“Actually, I think it would be better to talk later.Right now, I’m exhausted. If you leave a number where you can be...”She took a quick breath.“Reached, I’ll call you in the next few days.”
Diego’s eyes narrowed and bore into hers.If he hadn’t seen her pain, her flippant attitude would have enraged him.“You’re not going to ask where we’ve been?”
Jayla had to swallow several times, blink back the tears, and lift her chin.“N-no, it’s none of my business.”
Diego took a menacing step toward her.
