Joseph’s brows snapped together.“I’ll never get over the way you two communicate. It’s come in handy a few times, but most of the time, it’s just irritating.”

Beau chuckled but stayed silent.

“I have a remote cabin you can use that’s under an anonymous name, and it’s under layers of red tape.No one can find it.No one knows about it but me, and now you two.”He held out a large manila envelope to Beau. Here’s everything you need to know, and the names of a few men who can help you in the area if you need it.”

“Some of our men?”Diego asked.

Joseph laughed.“No, unusual men. They’ve lived on the mountain their whole lives, and are some of the toughest people I’ve met.”

Beau glanced at Diego.“We’ll take any help we can get, and if you trust them, we will. How do I get in touch with them?”

“They’ll get in touch with you.”

Beau nodded.“For how long, Director?”

Joseph sat back down and stared at a frame he’d had on his desk for as long as he could remember.“That might be an issue. We’re close to the group of people that were left after the raid, but it could still be a month or more.”

The men glanced at each other before Beau turned toward the director.“We’ll deal with it, Sir.Our last mission is over, and we’re just trying to figure out what our next step should be.This will give us some time to do that.”

Beau walked forward and pointed to the frame.“May I, Sir?”

Joseph lifted the picture to Beau and watched his expression. The picture was about eight years old, but it was one of his favorites. It captured part of her beauty, but also her spirit and charm, even though she was covered in mud.All you saw was part of her face, but the rest of her was covered. She’d lost a mudslinging contest with an orphanage she’d volunteered at in South America. It had been the kids against the adults. The kids had blown them away, but you couldn’t tell from the joy on her face.

“She’s a tomboy?”Beau asked.

Joseph took back the picture after Beau had shown it to Diego and placed it beside the only other frame in the room.

“Not really. She’s in a class all her own.She can act very feminine, but she can also act like an agent.”

Shit, well, that didn’t tell him much.“Where is she now, Sir?”

“We have her stashed in a vehicle. The vehicle is large, but you guys are going to need it.You have bags packed already...”

“How’d you know we would agree?”

Joseph looked hard at the two.“I’m the director.I’m supposed to know everything.”

“Sir, if I might say, you can be pretty spooky sometimes,” Beau spat out.

Joseph just smiled.“Your bags and some firepower are already in the back of the SUV.”He grinned when Diego grunted and frowned.“I can’t take you to where she is, for obvious reasons, but I’ve got a man who will.”Joseph stood and held out a hand over his desk.

Beau leaned forward and shook the director’s hand, and then stepped back to let Diego do the same.“How are we supposed to keep in touch?”he asked.

“The mountain men will come to you.No calls whatsoever.Got it?”

Both men nodded and turned when the door opened.

“This is Nick. He’ll take you to her.”

Both men nodded and started to walk out the door.“Guys,” he said and waited for them to turn.“I will never be able to repay you for this. She’s the only light I’ve had in my life since her parents died. But she was special before that, and you’ll see why.”
