“We have to head back to Steamboat soon. We have to go to the doctor at two o’clock. After breakfast we’ll have just enough time to get there. We’re having an ultrasound today.”

“I forgot. Glad you reminded me.”

After a late breakfast, they drove the nearly three hours to Steamboat and directly to the doctor’s office.

Millie held Adam’s hand as they went inside. They walked up to the check-in desk. “Hi, I’m Millie Sullivan and I have an appointment to see Dr. Brainard.”

The young woman with tattoos on her arms and a ring in her nose, smiled. “I see you’re here for an ultrasound. You must be so excited. Dr. Brainard will be with you shortly.”

“Yes, thank you. We’re very excited.” She turned to Adam. “Let’s have a seat until they call us.”

They waited for about five minutes before Millie’s name was called.

This nurse was somewhat older, with a little gray in her dark black hair. “Follow me please.”

They went into a room with a table.

The nurse handed her a gown. “Tie it in front and undress from the waist down.”

In a few minutes the doctor entered. “Millie how are you? I see you brought Adam.” She shook both of their hands. Then she pulled a machine over to the table.

The doctor donned gloves. Then she opened Millie’s gown exposing her entire belly. For the ultrasound she squeezed some gel on Millie’s belly and used a fat wand to spread it around and around.

The gel was cold and Millie was sure her entire stomach was covered with goose flesh.

The doctor was looking for something specific.

“Here we go. See the baby’s heart?”

“Yes,” said Millie, awe in her voice.

“That’s our little miracle,” said Adam.

Doctor Brainard increased the sound and, they heard their baby’s rapid heartbeat.

Millie started to cry. “This is so wonderful. I always hoped but didn’t know if I’d ever have children and look. Look at our baby, Adam.”

He lifted her hand and kissed the top. “I see our little peanut, sweetheart.”

Doctor Brainard smiled. “Do you want to know the sex of the baby?”

Millie shook her head. “We decided we want to be surprised just like Adam’s mother was.”

“Sounds good. Let me snap your picture.” In a matter of seconds the doctor handed Millie a black and white photo of their baby.

Adam helped Millie sit up and after wiping the gel from her belly, she dressed.

“Thank you, Doctor.” Millie held the picture.

“Yes, thank you,” added Adam.

They walked out of the office hand-in-hand. The ride home was quiet as each of them held their own counsel.

When they arrived, Adam hurried around the truck to Millie’s side and helped her down.

She linked her arm with his for the walk to the house. “Now, we need to start thinking about names. Maybe two of each gender.”

“Okay. What do you have in mind?”
