Alexis heaved a sigh.“Because the sheriff doesn’t know it’s McNubbin and they have a good relationship. He trusts McNubbin, maybe because he’s his uncle.Bob, that’s the sheriff, is married to Derrick’s mom’s sister.”
“Derrick?”
“McNubbin.”
He stepped closer and snaked an arm around her waist, tugging her flush with his chest.“I couldn’t bear it if something happened to you.”
She pushed against him.“That’s nice sentiment, but I don’t need you to take care of me.Not that way.I need your painting and that is all.I admire your work. You’re brilliant with a brush and you’re a billionaire to boot.”
“Some women would say you’re being an idiot by not taking me up on my offer.”
“I’m not some women or even most women.Being rich isn’t what drives me.Watching someone discover great art for the first time, and then being able to buy that art and take it home, is what drives me.It’s an amazing feeling.”She fisted her right hand and placed it over her heart.“Other than falling in love with Jim, I don’t have anything else to compare it to.”
“I don’t think I’ve ever felt that before for a person.I know I didn’t for Melody but I do understand.I feel that way about the painting I’m loaning you.”
Suddenly, she was all business.“I need to see about getting some glass in that window or getting boards up.Are you staying or going?”
“Staying.I can’t let you stay here without some protection. And since you won’t let me get you some, you’re stuck with me.”
Alexis was touched by his concern though she didn’t think anything else would happen today. But, since Horace seemed to be stepping up his harassment, tomorrow might be another story.
