He pulled his arm free and put it around her shoulders, then brought her closer. “I’d never brought anyone here before, but I couldn’t imagine coming here without her.”

Trevor rolled his blue eyes. His blond hair was just below his ears, and he flicked it out of his eyes with a shake of his head. “Boy, you two have it bad. What I want to know is if Miss Lanie would like to go for a walk. Would you?” He made his way to the front door and held out his arm.

Lanie blushed and dipped her chin. “Yes, I would like that.” She stood and walked around the sofa to take his arm. “Where are we going?”

“Wherever you’d like, pretty lady.”

Lanie looked back at Jessica with a twinkle in her dark brown eyes. “A silver tongue this one has. Will my honor be safe?”

Jessica laughed and then shrugged. “You know him better than I do. We only met at the gala before today and that wasn’t a happy time. You just spent three hours with him. But I have a feeling you will both need to worry about your honor.”

Lanie threw back her head and laughed, tossing her long black hair that hung in loose curls to the middle of her back. She’d removed the cornrows and the braid, opting to let her hair be loose and natural. She took Trevor’s arm, and the two disappeared out the front door.

“How about we let you all unpack, and we’ll meet back here around six o’clock for dinner?” asked Roark.

“That sounds good, son.” Marian Sullivan stood.

Her husband, Riley, stood, too. He walked over to Roark and Jessica. He was nearly as tall as Roark. His hair was still dark, and he had silver streaks on the sides, just like Roark. “I’m so glad you finally found each other, and I’m glad you’re not playing games. Your mother and I married after knowing each other for only a week. Everyone, all of our families and friends, told us we were crazy. That was forty-two years ago, and I still know she’s the only woman for me.”

Jessica watched Riley as he gazed at his wife. She was warm inside seeing such love and pride like she’d seen on the face of only one other man…her father…when he looked at her mother. Would Roark look at her like that someday?
