“Thirty-five so far.” She took another sip of her drink.
His brows lifted and his deep, emerald-green eyes widened. “That’s amazing. How long have you been writing?”
“I started writing full time five years ago, just after college. I wrote some books when I was still in college.”
“You’re very prolific.”
She smiled, delighted she could impress him already. “Well, they pay the bills and in order to do that, I need to publish consistently. So I publish about nine or ten books a year. When I started, my output was, of course, much less. As I learn more, I get better at writing quickly, and I publish more often.”
He leaned toward her, his forearms on the table and his hands clasped. “How can you type that fast?”
She laughed softly, pleased with his interest in her career. “I started dictating a couple of years ago and it tripled my productivity. The learning curve was high, but once I taught the program to recognize my voice and taught it the extra words, I need for my books, it works great. I had to adjust the way I write because I use the words on the page to prompt me for the next words, if that makes sense.”
“It does.” He sat back. “Would you care to go somewhere for a late lunch or an early dinner? I’d prefer this was a date rather than an inquisition, which it has been. My fault for that. I simply wish to know as much about you as possible.”
She took another sip from her straw and wondered why he hadn’t said anything about himself. So far, he’d asked all the questions, and she’d answered. Maybe if they went to get something to eat, he would be more forthcoming. “I…I would, and I’d like to know more about you.”
He stood and walked behind her to pull her chair out.
“Very chivalrous. Thank you.”
He lowered his head in a bow. “You’re welcome, my lady.” He straightened and smiled widely. “I have my car close, and I know a great little Mexican restaurant—that is, if you like Mexican food.”
Her eyes widened. “It’s my favorite.” She could almost taste the green chili now.
He grinned. “Mine, too.”
She dropped her remaining drink in the trash before leaving Starbucks. “I’m ready when you are.” Jessica watched as he put his arm behind her, like he would have guided her with his hand at her waist. But he must have remembered it was their first date and placed his hand behind him instead. Very interesting. He’s such a gentleman. I wonder if he always is or just on first dates?
He smiled. “Let’s go then. We have a lot to talk about.”
