Agatha had prepared a veritable feast, including a stew, pork roast, fresh hot biscuits with butter, and mashed potatoes.
Lottie hadn’t seen so much food since Christmas at the Haynes’ when she worked for them as a maid. Of course, their feast was only for the Haynes and their guests, but she remembered serving it.
Ross and Fiona were late.
After a few minutes, Brodie threw his napkin on his plate and stalked out of the kitchen.
He returned shortly and took his seat again. “They’re coming.”
Ross entered first. “Sorry, we got to talking.” He sat at the head of the table. Susie in her highchair was on his right, Jenny on his left, next to Jenny was Fiona, then Brodie and then Lottie.
“Is that what they call it now?” Brodie winked at Lottie.
Why did he wink at me? I feel like I should know something that I don’t.Everyone laughed, so Lottie did, too.
As soon as Fiona joined the table, they began to pass the food around, and the room grew loud. Everyone competed to hear what their spouse had said. Even the little girls were in on the conversation between their father and Fiona.
Clay and Gwen were on the other end with Ivy and Tucker, then Maisie and Frank on that side of the table across from Lottie and Brodie.
Brodie leaned down and whispered in her ear. “Get done with the dishes as fast as you can. I want to show you the barn.”
Heat rose from her chest to her cheeks. What was it about Brodie that everything he said made her blush?
When the meal was over, all the new sisters-in-law cleaned up the kitchen.
They had Agatha sit at the table, directing them where to find everything needed to clean the dishes and where they should be put after they dried.
Brodie came back into the kitchen almost at the same second they put away the last dish.
“Sorry, ladies, I’m kidnapping my bride.” He held out his hand to Lottie.
She grabbed it.
They hurried out the back door toward the barn.
She wondered what he had planned. Whatever it was, she liked the feeling of his big hand in hers.
