“Whoa, whoa.” I face him and get down to his level.
“What’s going on? What do you need?
He lets out a rough exhale, his eyes flashing blue so bright that it’s almost like I’m staring at a flame.
“You.”
Chapter 17
How High Is The Moon
ELI
It’s getting late. The moon is most likely out since I can feel every single goosebump on my skin and I’m trapped in an elevator with the one girl I see as my mate and have zero self-control over.
I walk over to the corner after saying that damning word and look at my phone. Thank God I see a cell bar.
I quickly call Gabe.
"What?” He sounds exhausted.
“Sorry to bother you, but I’m currently stuck in an elevator with Ava and we’re—“
He bursts out laughing immediately.
“Oh, this might be the best day of my life, you’re stuck? In a small space? With the one woman you can’t control yourself around?” He laughs even harder.
“Wow, how’s the horniness now? Should I call Jim so we can revisit that moment in the office? Oh shit, does that mean your erection is gone, I know Jim doesn’t exactly rub you the right way, get it, rub?”
I have no clue how I don’t crush the phone in my hand and punch it through a wall. My blood is boiling, I can’t even find the humor in the moment because I feel it in the air buzzing around me, in the way my ears are alert to every sound outside the building.
"Gabe.” I can barely get his name out.
“Gabe, how high is the moon?”
He’s very quiet.
“It's not looking exactly great, okay hear me out… why don’t you just bite her and get it over with?”
I look over my shoulder. Ava’s watching me with rapt interest, and then she crosses her arms and scowls, looking away.
“Yeah, safe to say I made that ship sail.”
"What the hell did you do?”
"All the wrong things, why?”
"I was the perfect wingman!”
I scowl.
“By killing her?”
Ava stumbles back against the wall.
“No, no, no, no.” I try to look less fierce.
“We aren’t talking about you—it’s Gabe, he’s a lover, not a—son of a bitch, Gabe! This is all your fault!”
