Chapter Four
When Poppy returned, it was completely dark outside.
Jillian hadn’t really noticed the time until she felt Poppy’s cold wet nose nudging her as she had been lost in her own thoughts.
She patted the dog’s head and they went inside.
The evening air had grown cool and when Jillian closed the door and turned the lock she shivered. It was too late to do any more tonight so she climbed the stairs to go to bed.Earlier in the day when she had been opening the upstairs she had placed her overnight bag in the room at the top of the steps and it was there where she and Poppy would sleep tonight.
When Jillian went into the room she felt a chill in the air.Rubbing the back of her arms she went over to check the window but it was shut. She looked around the room.Nothing seemed to be out of place but something was different. The room felt colder than the rest of the Inn.
Poppy went toward the closet door.
Jillian noticed it was open slightly.
She went toward the door in question and wondered how it came to be open. She opened it all the way and found nothing inside.Jillian frowned and reached for the string to turn on the light. The light didn’t reveal anything unusual and when she went to turn the light off, Jillian noticed a piece of wallpaper had been torn away from the wall at the top of the inside wall. She stepped inside the closet for a better look.
In the top right-hand corner of the small closet the wallpaper looked loose. When Jillian pulled it a bit, it easily came away from the wall.Behind the paper was a little alcove and inside of it there were several small notebooks.
Jillian grabbed one of the books down from its hiding place and took it out into the bedroom for a better look. She sat down on the bed and opened the book.
This could be written accounts of back then!
She flipped to the first page then looked through a few pages. It looked like Claire’s diary.“Oh my gosh!Ask and ye shall receive,” she muttered to herself.“But this is even better than newspaper archives.”
Jillian went back into the closet and got the rest of the books.
The ease in which she found the diaries astounded her.Like they were waiting for her to discover them.Jillian went still and looked around at her room. She did feel like this was creepy as all hell.
With a definite shiver she sat down on the bed again to read the first book.
She must have fallen asleep at one point because the next thing she knew Poppy was at the door growling softly at the hallway.Jillian got up and went to the door.Pressing her ear against it, she listened.
She could hear voices raised in anger somewhere down the hall. She couldn’t make out the words, but she could sense the anger present. Then she heard footsteps running toward her room.
Poppy heard them too and she began barking.
Jillian hushed her and tried to listen but she didn’t hear anything. She pressed her lips together and reached for the doorknob.Opening the door just enough to peek out in the hall Jillian was surprised to see there wasn’t anyone there.Frowning, she opened the door completely and stepped out of the bedroom.
The hallway was empty.
Taking hold of Poppy’s collar, she and the dog walked down to the end of the hall. She didn’t find anyone or anything.Jillian knew she had heard voices as well as footsteps though. Was someone playing tricks on her?
