My curled fist scrunches the papers and I shake my head. “Yeah, maybe. He could have kept her away on purpose.”

“If that were the case, then he wouldn’t have gotten her a job as deputy. I dug a little deeper. She put in the transfer request about two months after Simmons’s stint in the hospital.”

I frown, my eyebrows pinching. “When was Simmons in the hospital? And for what?”

“Heart attack. A few months back about when you arrived up north before you headed to Arizona.”

I roll my eyes. “Too bad it didn’t take out the ugly bastard.”

Cowen snorts. “Think of it this way: he had a heart attack so you can lure his daughter to the dark side.”

My lips twitch with amusement, but I study my brother carefully. “You think any of our guys would be willing to give us updates on her?”

He shrugs, looking around the garage of the clubhouse. “Yeah, but we have to consider if it’s worth it. Every time they reach out is a risk, and we should limit it to what’s necessary.”

Sighing, I stand and stretch. My focus is too lost to continue to work on the bike. It’s an older one I’m looking to restore, but I haven’t had much time lately. “You’re right. I can do my own surveillance.”
