“Calloway.”

He raised his brows. “Mr. Calloway, it’s going to cost?—”

I tossed my card over to him. “Get ’em out now! I’ll wait.”

Jasper glanced at the card and snatched it. He did his secretary duties while I paced the lobby. What seemed like forever was finally over when I saw Z coming from the back. She rushed over to me and wrapped her arms around me.

“Thank God,” she exclaimed.

Moments later, all my family came out one by one. All the guys looked angry, and I didn’t blame them. To be emasculated in front of their women was something I was upset about them having to experience.

“How the fuck are we supposed to get home? Nigga, we can’t all fit in the hotbox,” Diamond said.

“Shit, fuck how we’re getting home. What are we going to do about your pissy patty-ass granddaddy, Chev!” Dio snapped.

“I’ll handle him. Let’s get out of here.”

Mali wheeled forward in the jail’s wheelchair. “Um, I can’t take this shit with me.”

Streets stepped in front of him, and Symphony stood beside him. “I got you, bro-bro. Chevy, open up your back doors.”

When we all got outside, Bishop, Bleek, and Pierre stood next to their cars. Everyone squeezed in so we could head back to our side of town. I noticed my thoughts starting to fixate whenever I looked at my wife. I was waiting for fear to settle in her face or maybe sadness, but instead, it was anger, concentration, and, from what I could tell, plotting. I placed my hand on her leg.

Zaria, what’s up?

I’m fine. I just want to get home to my babies.

Are you?—

June, just get me home, please.

The hell?I didn’t like it when she was in this space; it didn’t make for a great night, and it didn’t help with how she moved around the house.

Once we got back, everyone retreated to their homes. Bishop and Pierre stayed a little longer so we could talk, while Bleek didn’t even bother to come in because Tania was inside.

Zaria cradled each twin in her arms, giving them endless kisses while speaking life into them as I took Bishop, Pierre, Indigo, and Tania out back. The moment we stepped outside, I put Bishop and Pierre on game so that if Clark tried to run, he would be caught before he set foot outside the city. I then focused my attention on the twins.

“Dinner. I want us to have dinner here in two days. Just us. We need to talk.”

They both stared at me and nodded. Tania reached out and touched me. “If I come to your dinner, you have to come somewhere with me. Deal?”

I wanted to say no, but for the sake of building something with them or giving them a chance to be a part of my life, I reluctantly agreed. My hope was to check them off my list of things that I insisted on getting accomplished before I found myself at the finish line.

June’s Entry

Z,

I’ve got a lot to say today, but not enough time. Seeing you being put in handcuffs hit me hard. Watching my crew being rounded up like trash made me angry, and I couldn’t help but try to clear Clark’s head with bullets. But I know he doesn’t hold any real power. He’s working with someone else, and I will figure this out. There are people watching us, monitoring every move, and I know who’s behind it. You and everyone else going to jail wasn’t a mistake, and because of that, I’m even more determined to handle Clark and get my shit together.

Today, I’m meeting with Bishop, and he’s setting up some stuff for the Calloways. When I tell you this, Z, you won’t have to worry about a damn thing. That’s my word. I don’t play when it comes to my family, and guys like Clark and anyone like him turn a nigga like me into a straight-up monster. I’m angry, I’m boiling over, and the taste of blood in my mouth should scare anyone who crosses my path.

I’ve fought way too hard to get where I am. My mind, body, and soul have been kept healthy, and I need to keep it that way. For me, everything is mental, and if I let just one thing shift my focus, I’m as good as dead. I know this entry is coming off with so much heated passion, but I need you to remember, baby, I’m a dog.
