“What do you think you were whining about?” he asks.
“Why are you shouting?” Will moans, appearing in the doorway, looking only slightly better than I feel.
I ignore him and turn to Leo. “Seriously, what did I say about Everly?”
“Oh, you said a lot,” Will answers, joining us at the table.
“Alot,” River emphasizes, and I groan, fighting down the urge to vomit.
Leo takes the seat next to me. He seems slightly less hungover than the rest of us, and I wonder if he abstained on purpose so he could keep an eye out for me. God, please let him have stopped me from doing anything really stupid—
“Oh, fuck,” I groan, eyes going wide as something triggers my memory. “Tell me I wasn’t actually looking at rings on my phone.”
“Sorry buddy.” Will slaps my back. “There was quite a bit ring talk.”
Feeling like I might hyperventilate, I turn to Leo. “She didn’t hear me, did she?”
He shakes his head. “That was all when she was still out in the living room.”
So she’d been out there sad drinking and I was in here with her cousins talking about rings. Jesus.
“But forget about all that,” Will says, pouring coffee into his mug. “What the hell happened after you guys went off together?”
“Nothing. We talked. We fell asleep.”
He raises an eyebrow. “She looked pretty upset.”
I rub my hands over my face. “Did anyone see her this morning?”
They all shake their heads, and my stomach sinks. “Bodhi, what the hell happened?” Leo asks.
“She kissed me.” I regret it the second the words are out of my mouth. With the exception of Leo, these are the last people I should be having this conversation with.
“Dude!” River shouts, then grimaces, rubbing his temples.
“That’s awesome, man,” Will says, much more quietly. He studies my face. “Why do you look like you’re going to puke? Besides the hangover, I mean.”
“Isn’t this what you’ve wanted to happen for, like, years?” River adds.
I gesture around the kitchen. “Do you see her anywhere? I’m guessing it wasn’t such a magical moment for her, since she snuck out on me.”
“Oh.” Will’s face falls. “That sucks.”
“I know all about that, man,” River says solemnly. “Jas totally bailed on me the first time we were together. Took off in the middle of the night. Didn’t see her again for months.”
I glare at him. “Thanks, Riv. I feel so much better.”
“But we’re together now!” he hurries to say. “It all worked out.”
“Did you actually talk to her?” Leo asks me. “Or did you just kiss her when you were both wasted?”
“Uh…pretty much the second one. Except she kissed me.” I hadn’t felt at all wasted by that point, after we’d slept for a few hours then lay there in the dark talking. But I don’t want to get into all that with them.
Will makes a face. “Drunken making out isn’t the smoothest move, but we can work with it.”
“Definitely,” River says. “At least we know the thought of putting her lips near yours doesn’t horrify her.”
I glare at him. “You are not helping.” Then I turn my scowl on Will. “And what the hell do you mean, ‘we can work with it?’”
