Chapter 2

Dr. Miller was incredibly embarrassed. The red covering his cheeks could actually give my own blush a run for its money. I had never heard him so out of sorts as he stammered apology after apology atme.

Worst of all was the fact that my little collision with the counter’s edge seemed to have broken the skin of my forearm, leading to quite a lot of blood. Dr. Miller insisted on looking at it, leaving me forced to sit there while he poked and prodded at my arm, only inches away. I tried to ignore the fact that he had buttoned his shirt wrong in his haste to getdressed.

“That was completely inappropriate, Jenny,” he muttered for the fifth time, swiping an antiseptic wipe over my cut. “Should never have happened. You must feel so awkward, walking in on something like that. I’m sosorry.”

“It’s fine,” I responded, also for the fifth time, clinging hard to the easy-going smile cemented on myface.

And itwasfine, right? I mean, it’s not like I had any kind of claim on him, obviously. He could put his hands and his…mouth anywhere he wanted. Yes, getting it on with an employee at work was definitely inappropriate but I was an adult. I understood that sometimes people hooked up at their places ofemployment.

It was just…Ineverwould have done something like that. Not ever. Not with any of my previous boyfriends. Not even with Dr. Miller, as head-over-heels as I believed myself tobe.

In the first place, I had never had sex anywhere but in a bed. Under the covers. Lightsoff.

In all honesty, I just couldn’t imagine there ever being a time in my life that I could be so overcome with passion that I would be able to forget where Iwas.

And I couldn’t understand why that made me feel so badly about myself. I mean, I should be annoyed at them, right? They were the ones who had been out of line. I had no desire to ever know that Robin wore tacky leopard print bras—that just wasn’t the kind of thing you could forget about aperson.

But sitting there in one of the exam rooms in the back, trying to ignore the proximity of Dr. Miller and the annoyed eye rolls of Robin—who seemed to think they had done nothing wrong—all I could think about was how small the whole thing made mefeel.

“I think you could use a few stitches,” Dr. Miller said gravely, straightening. “Why don’t you let me take care ofthat?”

“Oh, no,” I practically yelped. “I’m sure it’sfine.”

“It’s a deep cut, Jenny. You must have hit it right on thecorner.”

Of course I did. Because that was my luck, wasn’tit?

Regardless, I knew I didn’t want Dr. Miller’s hands on me for another second. Plus, I had a terrible feeling I was going to start crying at anyminute.

“I’ll just keep pressure on it,” I told him. “And if it’s still bleeding tomorrow I’ll go to theclinic.”

He didn’t seem all that happy about it and Robin sighed loudly. “You heard her, Cal. She’s fine. Besides, she’s a big girl, even if she doesn’t act like one. I’m sure she can figure out how to get to the doctor on herown.”

Dr. Miller shot a glare over his shoulder and I concentrated very hard on keeping the smile on my face. “Really,” I assured him, nearly wincing at how falsely bright my voice was. “I’mfine.”

He let out a low sigh. “At least let me put a butterfly bandage on it,” hesaid.

“Sure. A butterfly bandage. I’m sure that will take care of the bleeding. Great. Thank you.”Oh my God, Jenny, stopbabbling.

He gave me a rueful smile as he reached for the bandage. “It’s the least I can do, seeing as how we’re the ones who startledyou.”

“You’d think the girl had never seen someone make out before,” Robin muttered, and I closed my eyes, mortified.

Ihadoverreacted, hadn’t I? I should have just turned around the moment I realized they were half naked and gotten out of there. If I hadn’t made such a big deal out of it, I would be at home eating ice cream right now. Broken hearted that my crush was sticking his tongue down mean girl Robin’s throat, sure, but at least I wouldn’t feel somortified.

“I’m sure it was startling,” Dr. Miller said, glaring at Robin again before facing me with a wince. “Totally inappropriate, Jenny. Again, I am so, sosorry.”

Oh my God, could he please just slap the Band-Aid on me so I couldleave?

After what felt like an eternity, he declared me all fixed up and helped me down from the table. “If it’s still bleeding tomorrow, or if the bleeding gets worse this evening, you need to go to the doctor. Or you could call me. Anytime, even if it’slate.”

Yeah, there was absolutely no way in hell I was going to call him. For anyreason.

“Sure thing,” I trilled, already half way down the hall, ready to be away from both of them. Of course, theyfollowed.

It wasn’t until I rounded the counter that I remembered the cookies.Shit.
