I don’t know if I should be annoyed or not—a famous musician just announced to the entire crowd that I have supposedly terrible taste in music. But somehow, irritation doesn’t come. I might not love this band, but that doesn’t change the fact that Ransom—freakingRansom—are playing a song, for me. Because River told them too.

I start to laugh—a real, full belly laugh, and River’s matches mine. He takes my hands. “Come on.”

He leads me to the dance floor, right in front of the stage. Cash winks down at me while his fingers move across the strings of his guitar. “This should be way faster!” I shout up to them, and Lennon flips me off.

Suddenly, we’re surrounded by River’s cousins and siblings.

“You need to show us some moves,” Rose shouts over the music.

“Yeah, how the hell does someone dance to EDM?”

“Whatever they’re doing is definitely not EDM,” I argue, but they ignore me and start flailing around, looking so ridiculous I have to bend over from laughing so hard.

“You having fun?” River shouts in my ear.

It’s been years since I’ve danced so much, years since I let myself go so freely. Fun? This is better than fun.

“Yes,” I tell him, lifting up on my toes to impulsively press a kiss to his cheek. “I’m having the best time.”

He brings his hands up to my hips just as the song comes to an end. He looks up at the stage and shakes his head, laughing. I glance over my shoulder to see Cash giving him an exaggerated wink as Ransom shifts into something slower.

“They’re doing this on purpose,” I say, and River looks down at me, blue eyes twinkling under the string lights overhead.

“Uncle Cash is really big on bro code,” he smirks. “He’s trying to help me out.”

“He’s helping you out by playing a slow song?”

River grips my hips tighter, pulling my body flush against his. “Yeah, Jas. This is definitely improving my night.”

I laugh into his chest, then rest my head there. The rest of his family is still around and I’m sure we’re drawing some attention, but I really don’t care. This feels too good, swaying here in River’s arms, his scent all around me. Just like the night we first danced together.

Maybe River is thinking the same thing, because he places a finger under my chin and tilts my face up to look at him. That intensity I’ve seen a few times—our date at Ruby’s, skating the other night, when he leaned over me in bed—is back in his blue eyes.

Just like that night at Ruby’s, I lift up and press my lips to his. And just like that night at Ruby’s, everything feels absolutely perfect.
