My dad isn’t ready to drop the sentimental stuff yet. He squeezes my hands. “The only thing you ever have to do to make us proud is to be you. You do whatever makes you happy, and I’ll be happy, too.”
“Even if that means dating Leo?”
My dad makes a face and Leo’s chuckle turns to a full out laugh. As hard as he tries to keep up the scowl, I can see the corners of my dad’s mouth twitching. “Fine,” he says. “If that kid—”
“Leo.”
“If Leo makes you happy, I’m all for it.”
I lean back into Leo’s shoulder, loving the feel of him next to me, so solid and warm. Soft strands of guitar music continue to drift across the space. Violet and Ash are laughing at something Fox says. My mom’s head is tilted back, watching the blanket of stars overhead. My gaze dances around the fire, from one familiar face to the next. My brothers. My sister. My best friend. My parents.
And Leo, right here next to me.
“I’m happy,” I whisper, my heart filling with the feeling until I’m sure it’s going to burst. “I’m so very happy.”
