Iwrenched the door open and shifted before my paws hit the ground.
“Staywith them until help arrives,”Isaid toOgden, who’d shifted and was telling someone, hopefullyVan, about the accident.Simonrushed to his brothers, muttering something about how they were running out of lives and how their mama wouldn’t be happy.

Chapter Thirty-Six
RYLEY
Iwatched in shocked disbelief as a tree slammed down on the carHaydenhad been in.Thenthe car was lost from sight behind a wall of quaking yellow leaves and twisted branches.
“Didyou do that?”Ipointed at the tree and turned my narrowed gaze toConny.
Heshook his head. “Notme.Theytook away my flute.”
“What’sthat got to do with anything?”
“Theflute is where the magic is,”Connysaid slowly, likeIwas a child.
“No, it isn’t.Ican do magic without a fucking flute.”
Conny’sforehead squished up in confusion. “You’rea hybrid—no, don’t take offense at the word—I’mjust saying that you don’t have magic like that.”
“Theherd was wrong.Aslong as one parent is a supe, the kid will be a supe.”Ihadn’t believed that a day earlier, but the people inWillowLakehad convinced me.Icrossed my arms over my chest. “Andfor the record, calling someone a hybridisoffensive.”EvenifI’dcalled myself the same thing more times thatIcould count.
Connygaped. “Butthat means my baby will be a supe.”Heshook his head. “Noway.Notpossible.Junioris human.Weak.Notmagical.Mundane.”
“Theywill be a faun, like their daddy.”
“Butthat means those asshole wolves will keep them.”
“Yeah.Orsell them to someone else.”Igrimaced.
“I…Ithought…Ithought they’d eventually letGretchenand the baby go when they realizedIwasn’t fighting them.Itold themI’ddo anything for them if they let her go.”Connyclamped a hand over his mouth.Hisface had gone white.
Idoubted they would have let her go regardless.Sheknew too much.ButIdidn’t say that toConny.
Connylunged for me and grabbed my hand, clutching at it.Hiseyes were wide and frantic as he squeezed hard. “We’vegot to get to her. We’vegot to save them.OhMagic, what ifI’malready too late?”
BeforeIcould answer, tires squealed over the asphalt.Thetruck fishtailed, sending us rolling to the right in a tangle of limbs.
“Whatin theMagichappened?”Imuttered asIrighted myself.
Connyrubbed his head. “Ithink we turned around.”
“Look, there is a roadblock! It’sabout time something went my way.”Igrinned. “Ifyou want to helpGretchenand the baby, you need to trust me.Helpme stopRobbieand his asshole friends.Thefirst step is getting away from him so he can’t use us as hostages anymore.”
“Whatif they hurt her?WhatifRobtells them to?”
“Robbiehas other shit on his mind right now.Heis thinking about how to save himself.Heisn’t worrying about one pregnant human.”
“Isthat a gamble you’d take with your mate?”Connychallenged.
“Yeah.Iwould,”Isaid.Ididn’t have to think about it. “Thisis the best chance you’ll get to have a better life for all of you.Mymate and his friends are the only ones who can stop him.”
Connylooked green, but he nodded. “IhopeI’mmaking the right decision.”
“Canwe get out of here now?”
