“Ihope you know what you’re doing,”Isaid instead, asIjumped into the front seat.Dillon,Gage, andOakpiled into the back, asWarrenshifted to his cat form and hopped into my lap.Hewas no bigger than an average house cat, so he stood with his front paws on the dashboard so he could see out the window.Assoon as everyone’s arms and legs were inside,Clivetook off down the road again.
“Watchthe sky forMercerandOgden,”Isaid. “And, uh,Simontoo.”
“Simon?Asin our brotherSimon?ThatSimon?”Warrenasked.
“He’swithOgden.They’refollowingRobbie.”
“Iknew he had it in him,”Clivesaid.Helet out a yahoo and pressed on the gas harder. “He’saRivers, after all.”
“Don’tkill us before we get there,”Dillonsaid.
Clivecackled, but didn’t make any promises.
Chapter Thirty-Five
HAYDEN
“Here,Alpha,”Ogdenshouted from the ditch.
Simonhunched over his mate’s back like a jockey riding a horse to the finish line.Thedragon’s long snake-like body was whipping through the air alongside the car as he guided us to whereRobbiehad takenRyley.Whenthey had found us a minute ago,SimonsaidMercerwas keeping watch onRobbie’struck while they came to direct us.
“Turn,Clive.Turn!”Simonyelled.
Clivedidn’t slow.Hadhe not heard?
“Turnnow,”Iyelled.
Clivehooted as he brushed the brakes with barely enough force to slow us.Wealmost blasted through the intersection before the car swung around the corner.Warren’sfront claws grappled to hang onto the vinyl dashboard while his back ones ripped through my jeans as he held on so he wouldn’t go flying intoClive’slap.
Itore my eyes away from the road to grab the cat in my lap, whileWarrenlaughed like this was the most fun he’d ever had.Thetires slid over the ground as branches and leaves from overgrown trees batted at the car.
Iglanced up.Mymistake.Thatwasn’t it.Clivehad just driven off the road and was racing down the ditch.
“Whogave this guy his license?”Dillonmuttered.
“Becareful,”IorderedClive.
“Theirvehicle is up ahead,”Clivesaid. “Ican catch them.”
Sohe didn’t slow down, andIdidn’t try to make him.Iwanted to get to that truck more than anyone.Butif we couldn’t stop them on the road, we needed a plan for what would happen when we finally hadRobbiecornered.
“Dillon, sendVanan update,”Isaid asClivefinally maneuvered the car back onto the asphalt.
“Alreadydone,” the hellhound said.
Ilooked atGage. “Areyou strong enough to keep going?”
Afterthe demon had bonded withWillowLake, he’d complained that his magic was weaker when he left the town boundaries.Ididn’t want him out there if he couldn’t hold his own.
“It’sbetter than normal.Mightbe because you’re here.”
Ifrowned. “Whywould that make any difference?”
“Becauseyou’re my alpha.”
Huh.Right.IsupposedIwas.Ihadn’t known if a pack bond would work the same for a demon.Apparently, it did.
“Vanand the others are a few minutes behind us.”Dillonlooked up from his phone. “Theywere already on their way whenItexted.”
