Chapter Thirteen

OGDEN

VanandHaydenhad been understanding, butIcould sense their disappointment.Me?Iwasn’t sure what to feel.Relieved.Guilty.Selfish.Apprehensive.Mostnotably,Iwas strangely happy to be staying with my cute little kitty cat.

“Canwe go?”IaskedOfficerHellhound.

“Beforeyou leave, can you take a look at something?”Vantapped something into a tablet, then turned it to face me. “IsthisWesley?”

Irecognized the picture ofWesleysitting in aBentleyBacalar. He’dgone to a car show inVegaslast summer and had paid a ridiculous amount of money to put his ass in that car.Heshowed that picture to people as often as he could.Ididn’t know whereVanhad found the picture, but it wouldn’t surprise me ifWesleyhad it splashed all over the internet so strangers would admire him.

“Yes.”

“Whois that?Isthat who abducted you?Didyou remember what happened?”Simonasked, peering closely at the image. “Isthat his car?”

“That’smy assistant manager,Wesley.Thecar isn’t his.”

“I’llcallSimonifIthink of anything else to ask.Andplease call if you remember anything more.Oh, and take that.”Vanmotioned to the whistle. “We’llsort out what to do with it later.Ifwe destroy it now,Idon’t know what it’ll do to your bond.Idon’t think we should risk that until we talk to some mages.”

Simonscooped the whistle from the table, then returned right back to my side and wrapped his arm around me.I’dalready divested myself of the tool beltVanhad given me, but he suggestedIkeep the tracking device for now.Justin case.Afterall, we still didn’t know howI’dbeen abducted the first time.

“Let’sgo,”Isaid.Iwas so ready to get out of here.

“I’llsee you both tomorrow,”Vansaid on our way out of the boardroom. “Wemight have more questions by then.”

Simonwasted no time escorting me out of the station, but when we reached the sidewalk, he stopped and looked up and down the road as if he didn’t know which way to turn.

“Simon?Talkto me.”

Hischeeks darkened.Hereally was the most adorable creature. “I’mnot sure where to take you.”

“Wheredo you want to take me?”Itried not to play into the innuendo.Itwas hard—ha, aren’tIpunny.ButImust not have succeeded because my poor kitty cat made astrangled-sounding noise.Howcould anyone be so precious?Iwanted to wrap him up in a fluffy blanket and hide him away from the world.

“I…I…” he stammered, and his cheeks reddened even more.Prettysoon, every bit of his blood would be in his face, and that wouldn’t do.Notat all.

Icradled his heated cheeks in my hands and looked into his eyes.Iwas pleased to see my touch seemed to calm him. “Talkto me,Simon.”

“Ithought about taking you home, but it isn’t very nice.Youneed nice things.”

Aw.Wasn’the the sweetest?

“Yourplace sounds perfect,”Isaid, thenIpushed up on my tippy toes and brushed my lips over his cheek.Itwas a fleeting little kiss that did nothing to satisfy my need to taste my cat shifter, but it had to be enough for now.Hisnostrils flared as he inhaled my scent, and his hands caught on my hips.Hisfingers dug into me, andIwas sure he wanted to tug me closer.Ifigured his inexperience kept him from following through.Well, and maybe the fact that we were still standing outside the police station.

Simontook my hand in his and led me away.Thefunny paper slippersVanhad given me slapped sloppily against the concrete sidewalk as we walked down a few streets until we arrived at an older four-story apartment building.

Seeingthe front door propped open with an old boot made me scowl.Anyonecould waltz in and nab someone.Withtraffickers as close asAspenBay, it would be naïve to thinkWillowLakewas safe, especially when this place seemed like a haven for supes.Thekidnappers couldsweep in and have their pick of dozens of different supes.Although, their demon guardian might offer some protection.Ihadn’t lived anywhere with a guardian before, soIcouldn’t be sure.

Whenwe entered the building,Ikicked the boot aside.Simonnodded his understanding as he tugged the door firmly closed behind us.

Hisapartment was, thankfully, locked.

“Um, here it is,”Simonsaid as he pushed the door open after unlocking it.Embarrassmentpoured off him as he looked at his feet and didn’t move any farther inside.
