Jakewas everythingI’dever dreamed of, and he felt even better.
AsIchased my release, my eyes started to close, but suddenly the manifestation of our magics took on a fervent rhythm that matched our bodies.Istared in awe as the white light ofJake’smagic came to life between us, painting pictures in the air—ethereal visions of the two of us, foretelling the life we might share.Myown magic surged to weave through the images.Whereour magics had started separately, they were merging between us, my black-and-red wisps withJake’swhite.I’dnever seen anything so breathtaking.
Iwanted to linger in this moment, butIwas too close to the edge.Icouldn’t stop.Witha groan,Icame hard, holdingJaketight asIfilled him.Hefollowed me a moment later, spilling over my stomach, marking me as his.
Whensome supes had sex, their magics united and made the experience even better.OrsoI’dheard.I’dnever experienced it myself, not until this moment.Ididn’t think any other union could produce what we shared, andIfelt pity for those other people who would never experience a moment like this.
Thescenes of us floated around us as our bodies cooled.Thenthe images created by our joined magics drifted closer.Iexpected the magic to simply fall into our bodies and be absorbed inside us again.Butwhen the images settled over our heated, sweaty skin, they didn’t disappear.Theymerged with our skin, molding to the contours of our bodies.Whenthe energy of our magic dissipated, the tattoo-like images on our bodies remained.
Eyeswide with wonder,Jakereached for the one on my chest.Icouldn’t make out all the details on my own body, which made me want to find the closest mirror.Butthe one onJakeshowed the two of us in an embrace much like we were in now.Ihoped mine was the same.Whenhe traced his finger along the lines on my skin, the image didn’t move or fade.
“How…?”
“Idon’t know,”Iadmitted. “I’veheard supes can exchange energy through sex, butI’venever had anything like this happen before.”
Hisgaze snapped to mine. “Isthis like the tattoosAshandDillonhave?Orthe markings onJeremyandAdrian?”
Isucked in a breath.Hadwe bonded already?Soeasily?Ishould have askedAdrianfor more details when he bonded with his mate, butI’dnever expected to need that information.I’dnever expected theEternalMagicto bless me with a mate.ThenIremembered whatI’dheard about bonds years ago.Themating bond wouldn’t finalize until both parties knew what was happening, and each person decided they wanted the bond.JakeandIhad too many secrets between us still for that to happen.
“No…Idon’t think we’re bonded.Notyet,”Isaid. “Perhapsit is because as an oracle you need a strong tether, and your magic is seeing ifIcould be that for you.Orit could simply be because you could be my mate if you wanted to be.”
Hisgaze snapped to mine. “Mate?”
Inodded.
“LikewhatJeremytalked about the other day?”
“Whydon’t we clean up?Thenwe can talk.”
Ireluctantly movedJakeoff me and rolled out of bed.Noone was in the motorhome, soIdidn’t bother with clothing asIwent to the bathroom to wet a cloth.Thesun had already risen, though, soIdoubted we’d have privacy for much longer.
Afterwe cleaned up, a process that hadJakeblushing again asIwiped the sweat and our spend from his skin,Irested against the headboard and opened my arms.Jakeclimbed into my lap and once againIwas struck by how simple and right this all felt.Itwas like he was always meant to be beside me.
“So, mates?” he asked.
Ibrushed a kiss against his hair and took a deep breath. “Ihadn’t planned to tell you so soon.Youonly just found out about theEternalMagicyesterday, soIdidn’t want to overwhelm you.ButIbelieve we could be mates.”
“Iknow you’ve already explained that to me, but that was beforeIknew you thoughtIcould be yours.Ihave more questions now.”
“LikeIsaid before, fated mates are two beings who are destined to be together.Somepeople say each person has more than one possible mate, but given how few people actually find theirs,I’mnot convinced that is true.”Iswallowed as emotions welled inside me. “Honestly,Inever expected to find mine, and yet here you are.”
“AndI’llbecome immortal like you. That’swhat you said, right?Mylife expectancy would change to match yours.”
Inodded. “IftheEternalMagicdoesn’t do it,Iwill find a way to do it myself… if you agree.I’dnever bind us without your consent.”Mychest tightened at the thought ofJakechoosing to hang on to his mortality and having to watch him grow old and die.Iwouldn’t survive it.
Jakewas silent for quite a long time afterIstopped talking. Finally, he asked, “Whydo you think we’re fated?”
“Youdon’t think it is prophetic that you painted so many pictures of the two of us, long before we met?Yourvisions don’t lie.Butmore than that, it is the wayIfeel toward you.Youfill my thoughts. You’vegiven me hope.”
“IthoughtIwas going crazy, painting the same stranger over and over again,” he whispered. “Whenyou walked down my hallway that first time,IthoughtIwas hallucinating.”
Hepressed his face into my neck, andIhugged him tighter. “Iam sorry you went through all that.Idon’t understand why your family never spoke of magic with you, since one of your parents must have been a supe.”Itwas shockingly cruel to leave him so ill-prepared and vulnerable. “Magiclike yours doesn’t pop up in random humans.”
“WhataboutJeremy?Itsounds like that’s what happened to him.”
“Heis the only humanIknow who was blessed with magic without having it in his family.Inevery other situation, magic is hereditary.”Ibrushed a kiss against his hair.
“Likea wolf shifter will have children who are also wolf shifters?”
