“I knew’d Monwaoh was going to be my mommy one day!”
That had the laughter dying on my lips.
Clay froze beside me.
“I lub you SO much Monwaoh!” she plopped down right between me and Clay and grabbed our hands. “Does this mean you’re getting married?”
Clay coughed and sputtered while I tried to hide my laughter, and my tears.
“Kaleigh, honey. One day at a time, okay kiddo?” Clay finally said.
“You always say that.” She sighed dramatically. “Now. Who’s making me breakfast this morning?”
Clay looked at me from over top Kaleigh’s head with an eyebrow raised.
As I looked in his eyes, I remembered the first night he promised me I wasn't alone anymore. At the time, I'd wanted so badly to believe him. Now, with his fingers laced through mine, Kaleigh snuggled between us and Maverick now stretched out at our feet, I realized he hadn't been making me a promise after all. He'd simply been telling me the truth.
EPILOGUE
CLAY
Five Months Later…
Monroe’s hospital room had finally quieted down.
My fiancée was a fucking rockstar. How she managed to push for over an hour until all nine pounds, six point two ounces of baby boy came into the world screaming.
Our little boy slept peacefully in my arms, completely oblivious to the fact that he'd turned our entire world upside down only a few hours ago. While his Momma rested in the hospital bed right beside us.
I couldn't stop looking at him. Counting his fingers and toes.
He had dark hair, like Monroe who wasn’t actually a strawberry blonde and dyed her hair back to her natural color after…
I shook my head. Kael Mercer had no place in this room, or in our lives for that matter.
The door cracked open.
A familiar little voice whispered dramatically. "Daddy! Is he sleeping?"
Noah startled in my arms.
“Maybe try whispering, Kaleigh-girl.”
"Iamwhispering."
"No," I chuckled. "You think you're whispering."
Rafe peeked around the door with a grin. “Safe to come in?”
I nodded.
Monroe opened her eyes and patted the bed beside her. “There’s my girl.”
Kaleigh handed her the huge card she had in her hand. Bright crayons covered every inch of the front. Stick figures. A dog that looked suspiciously like a fluffy potato. And a baby with bright orange hair.
"I drawed us!" she announced proudly.
"I can see that." Monroe grinned as Kaleigh climbed carefully onto the bed before looking at the tiny bundle in my arms.
