“You’re gonna make me wait until the third date to sleep with me, aren’t you?”
“Robbie said some women find that romantic.”
“I’m gonna murder Robbie.”
He chuckled, pulling her abruptly in for a tight hug, squeezing her close against his chest. “Robbie said you’d say that.”
“Good. So he’ll see it coming.”
With a laugh, he kissed her forehead gently.
“I’m leaving tomorrow,” he said. “Dr. Alton has agreed to meet with us. There is a late flight from Seattle to San Francisco that will leave me time to reach a vampire hotel well before sunrise.”
“Vampire hotel?”
He smiled, his fangs glinting in the glow of her porch light. “Aye. Vampire hotel.”
“Why does that sound like an early 2000s band name?”
He looked puzzled.
“Vampire hotel? Vampire Weekend?”
“Of course they’re open on the weekend.”
She snorted a laugh. “You don’t listen to modern hits radio?”
“I dinnae listen to the radio at all.”
Of course he didn’t.
“Is that funny?”
She laughed. “No.”
He squeezed her tight against him. “I have learned that it is customary for boyfriends to call or text their girlfriends.”
Her laughter died when he pressed his lips against her neck. He kissed his way up to the sensitive patch of skin behind her ear, and she shivered.
“You can text me.”
“But not call?”
“No, you can call me. If you want.”
Against her skin, he murmured, “I do want. I want verra much.”
“Okay,” she said in a breathy voice.
He dropped a soft, gentle kiss on her lips, a kiss that was dripping with longing. And then he was gone, down the stairs and looking at her over the open door of his SUV, a broad smile on his face.
“Be safe,” she called out. “And bring me some of those tiny toiletries from your hotel.”
“Aye,” he said with a wink. “I’ll talk to you soon.”
Long after Callum had gone and Jory had washed her face and hung the gold corset back in the closet, his smile replayed in her mind. Her former lover. Her former husband. And now, even if onlyfor now, herboyfriend. She laughed out loud.
