“So, um, I don’t know everything that went down when you got the alpha title, but do you fear your father will show his face around here again?”
“It’s the one thing I fear the most, I’m afraid, but there isn’t much I can do about it.” Silas opened the bathroom door and surveyed the room. “Want to get rid of the tiles first?”
I decided to drop the topic of his father since he seemed to need a break from it and moved into the bathroom as well andpointed to the sink. “We should remove the sink, bath, and toilet first.”
“He wants everything out?”
“Oh yes, everything goes. Better get your strength ready.”
He laughed. “Bring it.”
An hour later, Silas was a dirty and sweaty mess, and I was…basically the same. To be honest, we stank.
“Want me to order us dinner?” Milo asked from the stairs.
“Yes, please!” I called back, grinning at Silas.
“Do you think he’ll allow us to eat with him?” Silas asked, sniffing himself with a grimace.
Frowning, I did the same. It was worse than I’d thought. “We definitely need a shower before sitting on any furniture,” I agreed.
Milo came into the chaos that was the bathroom, showing us his phone. “I’m thinking of diner food, but I don’t know if they deliver today or not.” He eyed the room, then us, his nose wrinkling. “Okay, you two seriously stink. Was it the toilet?” he questioned, eyeing the exposed tube where the toilet had been not even an hour ago.
“Actually, it was mostly the sink,” I explained, pointing to the exposed pipes. There was a lot of nasty stuff in there.”
Milo shuddered. “I can only imagine. So, new plan.” He pocketed his phone and clapped his hands. “You two need to shower and then the three of us will eat at the diner. Chop chop! I’m starving.”
Chapter Twenty-One
Milo
“You’re coming home?!” I squealed, waking poor Darius before I could reign in my excitement. We were still in bed as it was early morning.
“I am!” Nathalia confirmed, her tone just as excited. “I can’t wait to see you!”
“Me neither!” I grinned. “But I thought you were gone for good? Is your brother not what you imagined?” That had been her only reason for leaving, and partly her career. Once she learned she had a half-brother she seemed to only focus on getting to him. I truly believed the career thing was simply a bonus.
“Well, Julian is exactly the same in real life as he was when we talked and texted over the phone. It’s his pack that’s the issue. Which is why I’m bringing him home with me.”
“I can’t wait to meet him,” I said, thinking of where they could be housed. Nathalia had given up her father’s old house for good when she left. His death was the only reason she learned of her brother’s existence.
“I need to talk to you about Julian before he meets everyone,” she whispered, likely afraid Julian would overhear.
“Anything wrong?” I asked, my eyes finding Darius’ who listened intently to the conversation, too.
“He’s um, he’s a cat shifter,” Nathalia whispered.
“And?” I asked, waiting for the reason she was whispering.
“And? That was it, Milo. He’s grown up in a wolf pack his entire life and it shows. He’s…guarded.”
“Well, we’ll stick Mary on him and he’ll open up real quick after that.”
She laughed. “Gods, I’ve missed you! Living out here with the pack has been torture! They rarely even have signal and their internet access is horrible!”
“But I thought you’d be closer to the big city, for work?”
“Yeah, I was told as much from the pack alpha, bunch of lies. This is even further out in the countryside than Groove Vale is.”
