Dread stirs coldly in my belly. This place is much bigger than I thought. I need more time to roam and search.

I peek at Aminta’s tablet by her side.

“August?”

My eyes fly to Milos’s face. Most people would agree that he’s handsome beyond words. They’d probably say the same thing about Cary, if he wasn’t scowling every five seconds.

From the corner of my vision, I see him watching me. A flash of heat surges up my neck.

“You will come back again?” Milos proposes in a sweet, charming voice.

“Of course,” I say, half laughing.

I don’t have a choice. Not if I want to find London.

Milos’s head tilts and he stares at me like I’m a rarity. A diamond in a collection of pearls. “To seeme, yes?”

My heart thuds. Does he know my plans? Why I’m really coming back? He made that soul disappear with a wave of his hand. What else can he do?

Then I notice his gaze cheating behind me. Something clicks into place:

Milos thinks I’m here forCary.

Which is absurd. Ridiculous. I have to swallow my laugh before I say, “Definitely. To see you.”

Satisfied, Milos beams.

Aminta steps between us. Her cold gaze rakes over me. “They should go.” She lifts her tablet. “You said we’d clear half this list today.”

My stomach plummets. I can’t go yet. Cary told me that time moves at a different pace here. Slower. What if that means London hasn’t been judged yet?

What if he’s one of the souls Milos is meeting with?

Milos glowers so Aminta says, gently, “You promised, my prince. The labyrinth is gettingfull.”

That changes Milos’s mood. “Fine. If we must.”

He turns back to me. His silk button-down is a deep maroon. The color brightens his skin like the edges of a fire.

“You must come back soon.” His fingers coast over the back of my hand “For the celebration ball.”

“Celebration…ball?”

He smiles, nodding.

I quirk an eyebrow. “What are you celebrating?”

Coyly, Milos replies, “You, August.”

“Me?”

A blush tickles my cheeks. But Milos flaps his hand like it’s nothing. “I love any reason to celebrate. Right, Minta?”

For once, Aminta looks like a rose’s soft petals instead of its thorns. “Yes, my prince.”

Milos draws in so close, his scent surrounds me. Charcoal and conifer. “Trust me, it will be worth it.”

My head spins a little. He’sso much. But in a way I can’t seem to resist.
