“You fucking heard me.” I snatched my hand from her grasp. “Don’t contact me anymore, okay?”

I snatched my purse up and dialed Drix’s number before I was even out of the restaurant.

CHAPTER 13

DRIX

The second I saw a call from Myome pop up, I knew it was some bullshit. She knew I was in an interview. The fact that she was calling instead of texting meant something was wrong, and if her mama played in her face, I was getting her beat on.

“Ay. I gotta step out. My wife is calling.” I pushed up from my seat and answered before I was even fully out of the frame. “What’s wrong, Yo?” I grabbed the microphone on me and started to yank it off.

She sniffled and I paused.

“Where are you?” I asked. “I’m on my way.”

“You’re fine. You don’t need to come here. It’s fine. I’m just so fucking stupid.”

“What happened?”

“I found out that my mom and dad played us and don’t actually want a relationship that isn’t toxic with me. They just wanted money from us.”

I sighed and felt myself deflate and soften as I pushed my way out of the room.

“Money?” I repeated. “How much money, baby?” I asked, and she started crying harder, making it impossible for me tohear what she was trying to say. “Ay, stop crying before I pop up on yo’ folks and make they asses eat the concrete. I’m not fucking playing, Myome,” I warned.

She laughed a little bit through her crying and sniffled. We sat in silence while she gathered herself.

“I’m fine. I’m just disappointed and I don’t know. I guess I thought I was fine not being close with my parents until I met your parents, then mine dangled a relationship in front of me and now it’s like I’m mourning some shit I never even had yet again.” She sniffled. “I can’t keep letting them in or around just so they can remind me that I’m worthless unless I’m doing something for them.”

“I hear you.” I exhaled. “Do you want to give them the money?”

“No,” she said quickly. “No. They don’t fucking deserve it.”

“You sure?” I asked softly. “We can make it shake, baby. Whatever you want, we can do.” I looked over at the door when it opened and someone stuck their head out.

I held my hand out toward him and he nodded before heading back inside.

“So you’d give my parents the money?”

“If that’s what you wanted.”

She exhaled. “I don’t want to give them the money, Berlin. I just… want them to care about me or my music or both.”

“I feel you. For real. You want me to come to you?”

“No. I just wanted to hear your voice. I’m going to head to the studio actually. I think I have something to say right about now.”

“You sure?”

“I’m positive. Finish your interview.”

“A’ight. I’ll call you when it’s over.”

“Okay.”

“I love you, Myome.”

“I love you too, Berlin.”
