I took that to mean she couldn’t afford childcare and nodded.

“My mom usually watches my nieces full-time, but they're sick, so she’s free. I’m sure she wouldn’t mind watching him for a few hours. I can book the studio next door and she can babysit there if you want.”

“It’s fine. I can’t ask you to do that.”

“You ain’t ask. I’m offering.” I snapped at Rome. “Call Mom for me and ask her if she can babysit for a few hours.”

“Yeah. Alright.”

I waved in front of Genie and the baby again to make sure they weren’t taking in a ton of smoke.

“What’s up?” Dashawn pushed the door to the booth open and stuck his head out.

“Take a ten. I’ll be ready to restart after that.”

“A’ight, cool.” His eyes drifted from me to Genie and his eyebrows dipped. “What’s up?”

“What’s up?” She nodded once.

He took the car seat and bag from her and set them both on the couch. Alan walked back in with the fan and made it rotate. It wasn’t long before Rome confirmed that our mom was down with babysitting and would be over in ten minutes.

“You cool with that?” I doublechecked.

“They’ll be next door, right?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay.”

“A’ight. Let me go lock that in.”

I patted her on the back and maneuvered around her to slip into the hall. I took the elevator down to the front desk, secured the studio, and paid.

I was on my way back to the elevator when my phone started ringing. I glanced at the screen but there wasn’t a name associated with the number.

I picked up anyway.

“Hello?” A soft feminine voice came through.

“What’s up?”

“Is this Drix?”

“Yeah. What’s up?” I repeated.

“This is Allison.” She cleared her throat. “I was wondering if there was still a job position open.”

“There can be.” I pressed the button on the elevator.

“I’d like to interview then.”

“I’m in the studio right now, but you can pull up if you want. It’s the same spot and room I used when I worked with Radiant Reverie.”

“Okay. Can I come now?”

“Give me at least thirty but any time after that is cool.”

“Okay. See you then.”
