The words leave me quietly, evenly, but the enormity of them sinks between us like a stone dropped into still water.

Valen watches me, unblinking and unmoving, but not without feeling.

“Yes,” he answers. “But if that happens, then we are all lost.”

I have known it since Valen first told me about the prophecies, since the weight of my fate settled onto my shoulders like something I could never put down.

I lift my gaze to Valen, my voice wavering.

“I can do everything right. Channel and merge the elements. Train harder and become a stronger warrior. Learn, study, and prepare for every possible outcome.”

I swallow, my fingers tightening around the warm ceramic of my mug.

“And it still might not be enough.”

The words feel almost impossible to say aloud.

“It still might not save them.”

My gaze drops to the tea between my hands.

“It might not matter.”

Valen’s gaze holds mine, and for the first time, I see something beneath his usual composure.

Sadness.

Not for himself, but for me.

My mentor rarely shows emotion. He has always been the one pushing me forward, challenging me, refusing to let me settle for less than I am capable of becoming.

“Perhaps,” he answers.

Then his expression changes. The sadness remains, but something fiercer rises beneath it. He reaches across the table and grips my hand.

“But know this in your bones—everything you do matters. Itallmatters.”

His fingers tighten around mine.

“So keep practicing and training and fighting. Keep getting stronger.”

His voice softens slightly, but the conviction behind it remains unchanged.

“But most importantly, keep believing. Do not lose faith, my girl. Not in yourself and not in what you are becoming.”

WIND-SWEPT HALLS

FORTY-THREE

Amara is proving herself to be a true prodigy with a sharp scholar’s mind. Were it not for the dire need of her gifts on the front lines, I would already be petitioning for her to begin the Air Clan Scholar path. Perhaps one day. For now, we share the burden of these ancient documents—fragments recently recovered by a trusted colleague from the deeper vaults of the archives. There is promise in them . . . but I grow increasingly uneasy. Trust, it seems, is becoming a rare commodity.

The hours of searching have worn us down. My eyes burn from scanning brittle parchment, my muscles stiff from being hunched over for too long. But the worst part isn’t the exhaustion—it’s the sheer weight of what we’re uncovering.

Across from me, Valen flips another page too roughly, the sound of crinkling paper sharp in the thick silence. His expression is unreadable, but I see it all the same. The tension in his jaw. The rigid set of his shoulders. He’s barely keeping his temper in check.
