I stare at him with side eyes, the ring pulsing once against my palm as if aligning with Thane’s words. And suddenly, the weight of what he is giving me settles a little deeper.

“Even if you are lost—if this gods-forsaken war tears us apart—if the world turns against us.” His grip tightens around mine, his thumb brushing once across my knuckles. “Even if it takes me to the ends of the realm, I will find you.”

The words settle between us like an oath etched into stone. Not just a vow, but a challenge to fate itself. An unbreakable thread woven between us, stretching beyond time, beyond distance, beyond war itself.

I swallow hard, unable to look away from him. “Thane—”

“I mean it.”

His fingers brush over the ring resting in my palm.

“These magics, whatever they are, have belonged to my mother’s family for generations. But this isn’t about the ring, Amara.”

His gaze holds mine.

“It’s about us.”

The breeze rustles through the golden leaves overhead. Somewhere in the distance, water trickles softly through the gardens. And yet the world seems to narrow until there is only him.

Only this moment.

“We seal the promise with these words,” Thane instructs. “I speak them first, then you repeat them. The magics do the rest.”

I search his face. “And after that?”

His expression softens.

“Then I will know—” he presses a hand to his chest, just over his heart “—where you are.”

The simplicity of his words curls around me like a promise.

“And you will know,” he continues, “that you are never alone. Never lost.”

The magics in the ring pulses again, thrumming like a heartbeat.

“You’ll be able to find me too,” he says, his voice quieter now.

Then he lifts his hand and places it over my heart. The warmth of his hand seeps into my chest, a promise made tangible, sinking deeper than flesh and bone.

“You’ll be able to feel it here, separate from our bond. It willfeel different.”

He removes his hand, but the sensation remains.

“It will feel more like a direction.”

I blink. “A direction?”

The corner of his mouth lifts.

“It’s like a compass,” he continues. “A pull through distance, through storms, through silence. No matter how far we are, it will guide you back to me.”

I stare at him, my throat tight. This isn’t just a promise. It’s a connection that will stretch across the realm, no matter the distance between us.

Thane speaks softly, his voice marked by a solemn tenderness. “It was first created long ago, when the clans were nomadic, when lovers and warriors were forced to part for long hunts, distant trades, and uncertain battles. A bond forged not just to guide one home, but to remind them they were never truly alone.”

The ring pulses softly against my skin.

“To remind them,” he continues, “that distance is not the same thing as loss. That no matter how far, no matter how long, they would always find their way back.”
