Anger speared through Emre’s gut, at the same time Zenith snarled.
“Return them to me,” Zenith growled, taking a step forward. “They’re not yours.”
“They’re not yours either,” Ronald retorted.
Zenith clenched his fists. Emre could feel Zenith’s anger; he could feel Zenith’s dilemma, too.
Trapped in the dead end like he was, Ronald had precious few ways to escape. But that also meant Zenith had limited options to attack, and Ronald had the pups with him.
The easy solution would be to breathe fire on everything—Ronald, the cart, the pups—except only Abbie would be unharmed. Bean didn’t have the same fire immunity his sister did.
I need to help,Emre thought, his heart pounding.
Buttwheel nudged him from behind, full of groceries from the store. Emre bit his lip.
“Stay,” he whispered. Buttwheel flipped its wheels.
Emre pulled out his phone. With shaking hands, he opened up the main group chat, the one with all of Zenith’s alpha friends and Emre’s omega friends. He shot off two texts: the situation, and their location.
Then he shoved the phone into his pocket and began unbuttoning his shirt and pants. Just in case he needed to shift.
Ever so slowly, he peeked around the wall again, still crouched low so no one would notice him.
“You were the one sneaking around my lair,” Zenith growled, taking one threatening step forward. “Emre isn’t yours.”
Ronald scoffed. “Emre is mine. That stupid omega cut off my bonding mark, but I’m going to put it back on him. These pups are mine.”
Zenith’s entire body was tense; he almost seemed to grow bigger with rage. “They’re Emre’s, not yours. You never even contributed any DNA, let alone parenting.”
Ronald was unmoved. “They’re wolf pups. They’re mine.”
The nerve of him! Rage boiled through Emre’s veins. He bared his teeth, about to charge in and claw out Ronald’s eyes.
“Hux,” Zenith growled, his voice barely restrained.
Something fell out of the sky. Emre only saw it because he was at the other end of the alley.
Ronald didn’t see it. By the time he looked up, it was too late.
A giant bird crashed down on him, stabbing its beak into his eye.
Ronald screamed. Zenith darted forward and grabbed the cart, tearing it out of Ronald’s hands. He shoved it down the alley toward Emre.
Their eyes met; understanding passed between them.
“Take them and go,” Zenith said urgently.
Emre sprang to his feet, sprinting over to grab the pups.
Ronald roared. Emre didn’t listen to his words.
He scooped both pups out of the cart, cradling them against his chest.Safe with me.All he had to do was grab Buttwheel, and get out of here. Zenith and Huxton were more than enough to handle Ronald.
Except several footsteps charged closer, gathering around the mouth of the alley.
Emre froze, his heart pounding. We had the upper hand for all of three seconds. He couldn’t run out of there now; who knew if those men had orders to shoot on sight?
“Zenith?” Emre whispered.
