“Did Vex just come here to tell me my woman freaked out because she realized she loved me and ran?”

“Yup. And he wanted to punch you.” Bishop grins.

“Don’t remind me.” I rub my jaw. “That’s going to hurt for a while.”

“Where do you think she went?”

Sheri went home. I know it. “Someone wanna drive my bike down to Beach Haven? We’re going to need it for the ride home.”

“We’ll get a prospect to do it.”

Time to go convince my woman loving me isn’t something to be afraid of.

“Before you go? I have one question. Does this mean you’re going to name your firstborn after Vex?”

“Don’t make me punch you.” That just became a distinct possibility.

What do I do first?

That thought has paralyzed me for a while. I mean, all I need to do is get in my car and go back to Beach Haven. It didn’t move from the airport parking lot where I left it. Maverick’s flight attendant said it would be safe here, and they meant it.

But what do I do then?

My check won’t be deposited for another two weeks. I should have just enough to rent another shack if I can find one and pay—

My phone rings…It’s going to be Fly.

I know it’s Fly.

What am I going to say?

What do I do?

How do I explain?

Figure it out before he hangs up…

I pick up.

“Sheridan, this is Holly. Your grandmother is having a hard day today. She’s screaming for your mother.”

Not again. The only thing I can appreciate is I didn’t get a call like this last week. “I’ll be right there.” My car might be a classic in the age sense, but it’s never failed to start…except when I’ve run out of gas. Hopefully, it doesn’t fail me today. I dig through my bag to find the keys I haven’t touched in two weeks.

Wait, what is this? I pull out a thick envelope with my name on it. Where did that come from? I didn’t put it there.

No time. I need to deal with Grammie’s meltdown, then I’ll open it up. I shove the envelope back into my purse and dig for the keys.

Gotcha…Please work. The engine turns over on the first go.

And you were worried. Explaining the inside of my car to Georgie, the tow truck guy, would be embarrassing. Like everyone doesn’t know I’m living in my car.

I walk into the nursing home, greeting every nurse I pass by. Holly lets me into the locked ward. “Your grandmother hasn’t been this agitated in months. We didn’t want to sedate her until we called you.”
