He’s safe.

I can breathe…but I can’t, not until I see him.

We wait in silence as the castle door opens and heavy footsteps echo on the wood.

“Max.” Fiona dashes over to him, smashing her body into his.

Maverick steps around him and walks over to Dahlia. She grins up at him with pure joy. “I missed you.”

He reaches down like he’s picking up a fragile doll.

“Gently. My tummy hurts.”

“What? Do you need a doctor? I’ll go get you one.”

She places a hand on his face. “No doctor needed. I ate too much waiting for you.”

“I told you not to worry. This was going to be a walk in the park.”

“Yeah, but a walk in the park could mean a gunfight at high noon.” She squeezes him tightly.

“Something like that.” He starts walking towards the stairs and stops to look at me. “Fly’s fine. He’s just settling some details. He’ll be here soon.”

“You promise?” Why did I say that?

“Assuming he doesn’t break his neck on that toy of his that he likes to ride around on, yeah, I promise.”

“Thank you.”

He nods and walks away.

And I sit, waiting…

The scent of sweet pastries and bacon fills the space. That means the caterer is probably setting up breakfast in the morning room.

How many people will be up to enjoy it when so many just went to bed a few hours ago?

Enough, especially since Dylan was one of them.

Should I go make a plate so it’s ready when Fly arrives?

Is he coming back? Maybe he realized that he doesn’t want to be with me. That I’m a waste of his time and effort. So many other women would be happy to be in a relationship…or whatever this is with Fly.

What do you expect? There’s no way a man like that wouldn’t be able to tell that you’re trash.

Except we were kissing and talking about our next date moments before he left.

Stop letting Grammie get in your head. She’s wrong. You aren’t trash.

Fly just needs to finish a few things…Things that took hours longer than the other men. They wanted to get back to their women…maybe he didn’t want to get back to you…
