The hidden tests showed that gas from the lower zone carried an unexpectedly large fraction of heavier hydrocarbons. As pressure fell at the surface, clear amber condensateseparated from the gas stream, while processing models predicted substantial volumes of ethane, propane, butane, and other natural-gas liquids.

For the investigators, the discovery explained the company’s urgency. A rich wet-gas zone could yield two valuable streams at once: pipeline gas and liquid hydrocarbons sold separately, with propane-rich production improving the economics far beyond what the public dry-gas estimates suggested.

An economist from the transparency panel compared the internal forecasts with the figures provided to provincial authorities. The confidential model assumed higher liquid yields, larger processing facilities, and a faster expansion across communal land, yet the environmental review had assessed only a modest pilot program.

Investigators then searched the equipment yard and found separator vessels, specialized meters, and purchase orders suited to handling condensate-rich gas. Near the tanks, an optical gas camera revealed vapor streaming from two fittings that appeared intact to the naked eye, and portable monitors registered methane and volatile organic compounds above the upwind baseline.

None of it proved full production had begun, but the equipment and emissions showed that the site had already been handling liquid-rich gas more extensively than the public description suggested.

“Those are maintenance-level leaks,” the operations superintendent told the air-quality specialist. “Every industrial site has them.”

She turned the camera so the vapor plume glowed across the screen.

“Then your maintenance logs should show when these fittings were inspected and repaired.” When he answered that the logs were off-site, she ordered the valves tagged and the surrounding air sampled through the night.

Attention shifted to the black shale itself when handheld screening detected elevated readings for several metals. Carefully controlled laboratory tests found traces of vanadium, molybdenum, nickel, and uranium in portions of the core, with concentrations varying sharply from one thin layer to the next.

The geologists cautioned the reporters gathering outside the laboratory tent. Metal enrichment in black shale was scientifically significant, they said, but a chemical reading was not the same as an economically recoverable ore body and should not be announced as a second bonanza.

To establish a mineable deposit, investigators would need systematic drilling, three-dimensional resource estimates, mineral-processing studies, waste characterization, water-demand calculations, and a separate economic analysis. Any attempt to extract those metals would also require a new development plan, new permits, and fresh consultation with the Indigenous communities.

The waste findings were more immediate than the metal question. Sediment scraped from the drainage channel contained petroleum hydrocarbons, high salinity, and elevated barium, while residue from one unlisted container showed the chemical pattern of flowback water mixed with condensate.

The levels varied across the site and required confirmation, but investigators concluded that poor containment had allowed industrial fluids to reach exposed soil where wind and storm runoff could carry them farther.

Ecologists followed tire tracks and utility trenches beyond the leased boundary. They documented crushed nesting cover, severed wildlife paths, abandoned burrows near the brightest floodlights, and a new access road cut across a seasonal drainage that local herders said carried water after summer storms.

Dust on nearby shrubs was thick enough to reduce the clean surface available for insects and grazing animals, and the constant noise had pushed birds away from otherwise suitable habitat.

The distinction mattered because rumors were already moving through the encampment. Some broadcasts claimed the company had found uranium; others spoke recklessly of rare earths, gold, or lithium, though no evidence supported those assertions.

At an afternoon briefing, the lead geochemist displayed a simple diagram showing the difference between hydrocarbons trapped in shale and metals dispersed within the rock. The wet-gas zone was supported by flow tests and fluid samples, while the metal findings remained preliminary points on a map rather than a defined reserve.

Reporters pressed the company’s regional director on why the richer fluid data and larger development footprint had been withheld.

“The figures were incomplete and commercially sensitive,” he said. The lead investigator answered.

“Commercial sensitivity does not excuse omissions from an environmental assessment. A wet-gas field needs more separators, tanks, truck movements, processing capacity, and flare control than the pilot you disclosed.” The director replied that the expansion was only conceptual.

“Your purchase orders are not conceptual,” the investigator said.

Community leaders focused less on the size of the discovery than on what the secrecy implied. If the internal plans anticipated processing plants, added pipelines, heavy truck traffic, storage tanks, and many more wells, then the environmental review had understated water withdrawals, wastewater volumes, methane leakage, dust, noise, road erosion, and the fragmentation of grazing and wildlife corridors. The investigators classified the observed damage as localized but active, with a credible risk of wider harm if drilling resumed before containment, baseline monitoring, and habitat protections were rebuilt.

The rights commission interviewed drill crews away from management. Several workers described being told to use coded names for the deepest zone, and one produced a photograph of a sample bottle labeled with a liquids ratio far above the number in the official file.

By evening, the agencies issued a joint preservation order covering all cores, fluids, electronic records, contracts, and communications related to the lower reservoir. Armed guards appointed by the court replaced company security at the archive, while community observers maintained their own written log outside the door.

The preliminary statement was deliberately narrow. It confirmed credible evidence of a high-value wet-gas and condensate interval, material discrepancies between internal planning and public disclosure, methane and volatile-organic emissions from site equipment, saline and hydrocarbon impacts in soil and drainage sediment, unresolved warning signs in shallow groundwater, and measurable disturbance to habitat.

It also reported metal enrichment that required further study but did not yet justify claims of a mineable mineral deposit.

The announcement did not quiet the site. It sharpened the protestors’ suspicions and drew new demands for the release of every geological map, financial forecast, and government communication connected to the concession.

Under floodlights, investigators continued cataloging evidence as the wind pressed against the tent walls. Beyond the fence, drums sounded at measured intervals, and camera crews filmed sealed sample cases being carried from the warehouse to a mobile laboratory.

The company had not been caught hiding treasure in the form imagined by rumor. What emerged was more plausible and more consequential: a commercially rich hydrocarbon zone, preliminary evidence of metal-bearing shale, and a pattern of concealed information that could transform a suspended drilling dispute into a far-reaching investigation of permits, profits, and consent.

The five men camped on the ridge smiled down at the chaos below, back-slapping one another in brotherly congratulations.
