“What happens now?” asked Bianca staring at the television reports about the protests.
“The protestors have arranged for new inspectors, surveys, and geological mapping to take place. They are from all over the world and will have indigenous representation with them the entire time.”
“I see,” she nodded. She started to leave, then turned and looked at Ham. “Do you still have the land document that I signed?”
“We do,” he nodded. “We haven’t shown it to anyone.”
“Good. Don’t. I think I might have one more surprise for them.”

The first convoy of independent investigators reached the shale site shortly after sunrise, its white trucks movingslowly through the protest encampment beneath the watch of thousands of people. They had been invited only after the suspension order became public and the company lost control of the narrative. “These conditions exceed your authority,” the company’s chief attorney said, holding the access agreement without signing it. “You may inspect the permitted areas, but our commercial files remain privileged.” The lead investigator pointed toward the cameras beyond the gate.
“Then place that refusal on the record. We are here to determine whether the permitted project and the project you actually planned were the same.”
After an hour of tense calls to Buenos Aires and corporate offices abroad, the attorney signed, and the gate opened under continuous observation by reporters and tribal monitors.
The first team sealed the control room and made forensic copies of the servers before anyone could alter the files. Technicians photographed cable connections, recorded system clocks, and logged every person who crossed the threshold, while a magistrate’s representative initialed the evidence bags.
A second team walked the well pads with radiation meters, gas detectors, groundwater probes, and handheld instruments that could screen rock for unusual elemental concentrations.
They found hydrocarbon-stained soil beneath a condensate valve, a drainage channel carrying elevated salts toward a dry wash, and several capped containers whose labels did not match the inventory supplied by the company.
“That stain predates our operations,” the site manager said. An investigator pressed a sampling tube into the damp earth.
“Then the laboratory will tell us whose chemical signature it carries.”
Hydrologists moved beyond the fences to springs, livestock wells, and seasonal streambeds identified by local families. Field tests showed rising conductivity and chloride in two shallow wells down-gradient from the pad, while one spring contained dissolved methane above the background range measured farther uphill.
The team stressed that the readings did not yet prove the source, but they were consistent with saline wastewater or stray gas reaching shallow water and demanded immediate isotopic testing and repeated sampling.
“You have one morning of data,” the company’s environmental director said. “You cannot call this contamination.”
The hydrologist held up the chain-of-custody sheet.
“I called it an impact signal. Your baseline report lists only one sample from the wet season and none from these wells, so you cannot call it normal.”

Laboratory staff cut narrow plugs from the core, scanned them, and sealed fragments for thermal and geochemical analysis. The early readings indicated a liquid-rich interval capable of producing more than ordinary dry methane, and the investigators ordered the original pressure and flow data from the exploratory well.
