They hadn’t given him the statistics. Or mentioned the possibility of messing up.

But he couldn’t just sit there and lament the situation. He had to do something. He bolted out the door, threw back his head, and growled at the sky, at the unfairness of it. He set his hand on the hilt of his sword, double-checking he was armed, and spread his wings. But where should he look?

The McGuires.

Perhaps the witches would know… God, he hoped they would. “I’m going to speak to your mother,” he bit out.

“What do you want me to do? How can I help?”

You could have kept a closer eye on her,he wanted to scream.“Get her books. Check with the witches. Whatever you can think of.” He launched into the air. He had to find her before it was too late.

He veered sharply to the east, flying faster and faster toward Nora’s.

He landed at a run, partially folding his wings as he raced up the porch. “Nora!” he shouted as he hammered on the front door.

The old wooden door opened, and Nora gaped at him. “What’s wrong?”

“He has Lyndsay. I let my guard down, and the potion didn’t work.” His breath came in hard exhales and deep inhales. “Is there any way you can figure out where they went?”

“Come in,” she said, hurriedly stepping aside.

“Don’t you have a crystal ball or something? Or can’t you read the leaves, or whatever? So that you can see them?”

“I don’t understand why the potion failed.” She was moving slowly—far too leisurely for the urgency of the situation. He wanted to shake her.

“It doesn’t matter unless it’s a clue to where he’s taken her. I don’t think it could have been far.”

“He’s delivering her to Lucifer for some reward.” He clenched his hands.

“Whilehecan travel wherever he wants, that’s not the case with a human. He will have limitations with her.”

“I hope you’re right.”

“As long as she’s alive.” Nora’s eyes held a measure of sorrow in them as they locked on his. “There has to be a piece of information we’re missing.”

David pulled out his phone, then flipped to the message he’d sent the witches the other night:

Caleb Dexter, born at 3:33 AM on December 12, 1974, in Savage, MN. Both parents killed in a house fire. He and the dog survived. He was raised in an orphanage until the age of fifteen when he fled—wanted for murder.

“Or some piece of that information we have is wrong,” she said. “That could be why the potion didn’t work.”

He searched the photos he’d taken of records. “This one has the time of birth as 3:36.”

She whipped her head around, the silver-and-black of her hair falling forward. “That could do it. Also, AM or PM.”

“I don’t know.”

“To find her, I need something that belongs to her. Preferably an item she values.”

“I’ll be right back.” Turning, he dashed outside. He spread his wings, then took off for Thurston Mansion.

He landed on the drive, then burst into the foyer. Both Grady and Justin came running. “What’s wrong?” Justin asked.

“The demon has Lyndsey.” The sickening truth of David’s words hit him hard. His stomach clenched in a knot. “Go get Val, then meet me at Nora’s.”

His mind began to spin with worst-case scenarios. No. He’d find her. She would be okay. He hadn’t given his life to save her only to lose her now. He hurried to her room, searching around for her camera. There was probably nothing she valued more. He found it on the dresser, then snagged it. Mere seconds later, he was soaring through the sky toward Nora’s once more.
