He followed my gaze. “What, pray tell, are you going to wear as a disguise? Because my hat and midge netting is spoken for.”

I stood and collected our bowls. “Then you’re gonna have to send Hair and Makeup over here, and they can make me into an old lady. I’ll pretend I’m your mom.”

The corners of his mouth twitched, the first hint of a smile all morning. “We both know that my mom would be incredibly insulted right now that you just called her an old lady. And c’mon—you’re gonna dress like an old woman the whole time you’re here? Two hours of hair and makeup every morning while you’re filling in for Ava—and organizing a wedding?”

“It’s only two weeks ‘til the wedding. I can manage that.”

Max rolled his eyes. “I’m heading out there soon. We’ve only got one car. What are you going to do—help me on set or cower in your bungalow like Greta Garbo?”

“Ivantto be alone,” I said, tying a bandana over my head.

“Fine.” Max put on his hat and mosquito netting, then slammed the door behind him.

CHAPTER 16

Ipeeped through the curtains, watching the paparazzi snap pictures of Max as he raced to the car and drove away.

I pulled out my phone and texted Caitlin.

Hey.

Hey. You’ve disappeared.

So, I was helping Max on set, but now… things are really screwed up.

What happened?

Um, go to Page Six.

I chewed my lip as I waited.

OMG! You kissed?

There was wine.

You shouldn’t drink wine, especially around someone like Max where there’s history.

Thanks, Mom.

Anytime. But what the hell? What makes this Page Six worthy?

Well, I don’t have an NDA, so I guess I can tell you my part…

I explained everything.

OMG. We’re coming over.

You don’t have to.

We’re coming over.

Not ten minutes later, their blue Mini Cooper pulled into the driveway. I looked up and down the street—there were no more paps hanging around that I could see. Angus and Caitlin walked inside, glancing over their shoulders as they quickly shut the door behind them.

“Let’s sit on the deck,” I suggested. Thankfully, there was a fence around the backyard.

I made us all iced teas, then collapsed into one of the blue Adirondack chairs.

“Caitlin, I’m so sorry. I’m your sister, I’m your wedding planner, and I know I’ve let you down.”
