“Let's go home and talk about this.”
“Alright. Rocco will meet us there.”
Sure enough, after Giovanni drops me at my car and we head back, Rocco is pulling up. I lead the two of them up to my office. Once the door closes, Rocco sighs.
“So we were right."
“Unfortunately,” Giovanni mumbles.
“Since you've got about a million cousins, we need to narrow it down.”
“What about Dante?” I ask, just throwing a name out there.
Giovanni snorts. “There’s no way. Too stupid.”
“Armando? Like, for revenge?” Rocco suggests.
I shake my head. “No. He’s been quiet ever since I took his pinky.”
“Were they able to reattach it?” Giovanni asks.
“Hell if I know.”
Rocco snorts out a laugh. “He's too busy partying to plan something like this, anyway.”
“What if we’re barking up the wrong tree?” Giovanni suggests with a frown. “What if it’s not a man at all?”
I raise my eyebrows. “What, you think Aunt Theresa did this?”
Rocco’s eyes widen. “Shit, maybe. She’s taken over for Uncle Roberto, hasn’t she?”
“Why would she? She’s got more money than God,” Giovanni points out.
I shake my head. “It can’t be her. She’d just talk to me if there was a problem. We’ve always been close.”
Giovanni stares at me for a moment. “What about... Beth?”
I scoff. “Beth? You mean the little girl who used to cry when I pulled her pigtails?”
“I mean, she’s got a motive,” Rocco points out.
“What, because I was mean to her when she was fifteen? Not much of a motive.”
“It’s really all we have,” Giovanni says, and I groan, rubbing a hand across my face again.
“Alright. Fuck it, set up another meet. Only let it get back to Beth.”
“Another fake one?” Rocco asks dumbly.
“Of course, a fake one,” Giovanni snaps.
I wave the two of them out of my office. I don’t want to think that it’s Beth doing this, that it’s any member of my family, but I can’t think of any other explanation at the moment.
Giovanni and Rocco leave and I stand up, heading downstairs to get something to eat. I didn’t eat anything at the party and now my stomach is growling.
I almost walk past them on the couch before I realize that Liana and Sonny are sleeping. Sonny’s head is in Liana’s lap, her head lolling back against the couch cushion.
The television is playing some cartoon movie about a kitten and a dog.
