I don’t want to remember that day, the day I found out she was pregnant. It was one of the worst days of my life, too, and I didn’t recover for months.

I open the door to the bedroom Sonny is sleeping in and she peeks her head inside.

“I guess I should turn in,” she says. “Don’t want him waking up and finding me gone.”

I nod.

“Alright. And Li?”

She looks over at me, one hand on the doorknob.

“Yeah?”

I take in a shaking breath. This is crazy. Completely insane. I have reasons for suggesting it, though, and although most ofthose reasons are about Liana, some of them have nothing to do with her.

“Let’s get married.”

LIANA

I instantly shut the door just in case Sonny hears us.

“What the fuck is wrong with you?” I hiss. He just stares at me like I’m the crazy one.

“We should get married,” he says again, and he’s clearly lost his fucking mind.

“You’re crazy,” I say, shaking my head incredulously. “I’m not going to marry you.”

“Because I’m crazy?” he asks, smirking.

“No! Because we’re not... we don’t...” I trail off. I don’t want to actively insult him because he’s done a lot for me tonight, but this is ridiculous. He can’t be serious.

“Alright, alright, don’t let your head explode. Just hear me out. It’ll help me get a tax break, and you won’t have to live in your car.”

“You filetaxes?” I ask incredulously.

“Gotta launder money somehow. I have several legitimate businesses on the books, you know.”

I guess when you make the kind of money that Dario does, it has to go somewhere, but still...

“And you think I’m just going to take you back? After what you did?”

“And what did I do, exactly?” he asks, giving me a cool stare.

I look away, swallowing hard. “It doesn’t matter. What matters is that we tried it once. It didn’t work.”

“I agree with you.”

I look up at him, shocked. “Then why do you want to marry me?”

“Want is a strong word. I want to help you. I want to help myself. This kills two birds with one stone.”

I go silent. Dario’s right, it would solve a lot of my problems, being adon’swife. And if he’s telling the truth about having legitimate businesses, financially, it would help him out, too. Tit for tat.

Do I really have a choice?

“So we’d be even, then, if we got married?”
