“Okay, good. But wait, why didn’t you tell Agnes that youaredating someone? You said she’s your closest friend at school.”
“Yes, but we’re notthatclose.Besides, Agnes has been looking for a guy forever. And it felt like I’d be rubbing salt in the wound with my happiness.”
“Okay, that makes sense. But then why didn’t you turn down her offer to set you up?”
“I did, just later on.I was so shocked when she came up with that, and I wasn’t sure how to reply without offending her.I mean, it’s her brother, and he’s just been through a divorce. And Agnes...I feel like I’m not making much sense.I’ve had some wine, and, well, I’m still angry at you!”
I cupped her cheek, rubbing my thumb at the corner of her mouth.
“No.”She pulled away and pointed at me.“You don’t get to touch me unless you tell me exactly why you came here and what is going on.”
I put my hands on the counter at the sides of her waist.“I came to tell you that I fucking love you, Amy.”
She softened instantly.
“And that I don’t want you to go on a date with anyone else ever again. And I didn’t get carried away, because I want you at my place forever.”
I hadn’t thought much about what I wanted to tell her, but my voice became stronger with every sentence. This was clearly what I wanted.Mom was right, and honestly, I’d known it myself all along.I loved this woman.
“Then why did you say what you said?”
I groaned.“Fuck, I don’t even know!I figured it would be better for you to be with someone who wants the same things.Only here’s the rub: I want those things too.I wantyou, and whatever you want, I want.Three kids, six kids—I’m in, babe.”
“You’re serious? You really want a family and all that?”she murmured.
“Yes.You’re the one.”
“Then you are my soulmate. And that’s scary because you’ve never wanted to be soulmate material,” she pointed out.
My girl was definitely a bit drunk, but I was enjoying her tipsy self.
She looked up.“I love you, but I don’t want you to say things you don’t mean.”
“The only time I’ve ever said something I didn’t mean was this afternoon. You can take me at face value about everything else.I had a lapse in judgment then, but it will never happen again.”
She licked her lips and nodded.“Okay, you can touch me now.”
I put my thumb on her cheek, then slowly moved it to her upper lip.“I love you.I want to be with you and only you.”
“As far as apologies go, showing up with ice cream is a very smart move. It’s earned you a lot of points. But saying you love me earned you even more.”
“I should hope so,” I teased.
“I’m sorry if I made you think I wanted to go on that date.I told her no after the meeting with Ms.Adams was over.I’m not interested in anyone but you.And by the way, if you want to earn full points, I also want a case of your family’s wine.”
“Consider it done.But why?”
“Because if you ever mess up again, I don’t want to drink cheap carton wine. It’s terrible.”
I laughed, cupping her cheeks with both hands.“Amy, I promise I’ll never mess up again.Never.I love you so much, and I want you to be happy. So damn happy.Always.”
I dropped my hands and kissed her cheek, moving to her earlobe and down her jawline before settling on one corner of her mouth.I kissed it, moving along her lower lip before capturing her mouth completely.I deepened the kiss, pressing her against the counter.
Amy was mine. She was mine. She was all I wanted.Years down the road, she’d still be the one I wanted.Right now, I can clearly picture my future with her.Attending family events together.Spending our time together having hot sex and helping each other along the way.Making every one of her dreams come true.
I moved us away from the kitchen.
“I love your pajamas.Did I tell you that?”
