“I’ll take good care of her, Doctor.”
Knox opened the door.God, this rain was something.It was as if someone was pointing a firehose at us from above.He got out and said, “Come on.”
He must have seen the reticence on my face.“Now is not the time to argue, Amy.”
Nope, it really wasn’t.The rain was pouring down on him.
“Thank you,” I told the doctor before pushing myself out of the car.
Knox put both backpacks on one shoulder and wrapped the other arm firmly around my waist as he helped me inside the B&B.
“What is with this rain?”Knox said as we stepped in.It was worse than when we’d come into town.
“You must be Knox and Amy,” the woman at the reception desk said.Her red hair was up in a ponytail, and she had gold-rimmed glasses.
“Yes, that’s us,” Knox replied.
“You’re lucky.I was supposed to have another couple here this weekend, but they called today to cancel because of the weather.”She took a set of brass keys from the wooden table next to the door.“I’ve got your key here.Come on, I’ll show you to your room.”
She walked in front of us, and Knox once again put an arm around my waist, stabilizing me.She led us behind a narrow staircase and opened a door.“Here it is.”
“Wow, this is nice!”I exclaimed.
“I’m glad you think so.”
We took off our shoes by the door so we wouldn’t track in mud and water.
The room was much larger than what I expected for a B&B.The wood was chipped here and there, and the curtains and bedsheets were just a little washed out, but it made the place feel extra cozy.Everything was decorated in shades of brown and burgundy.Even the wood seemed to have a reddish hue—cherrywood, probably.
“Since I’m assuming you don’t want to leave the building again today, I’ll bring you something to eat in a bit.Do you have any food allergies?”
“No,” Knox and I replied at the same time.
“Perfect, then I’ll leave you to get comfortable and get out of those wet clothes.”
My cheeks heated after she closed the door, and Knox started to laugh.He still had an arm around my waist.He moved slowly in front of me to lift my chin up.“Your mind is in the gutter already.”
And he was right.
