“If you’re there, then I know I’ll have fun.”

Her head tilts to the side. “That’s very flattering. Are you trying to flirt with me?”

Panic erupts in my chest becauseoh fuck, oh fuck…

But then she laughs. “Just kidding, you would never flirt with an old bag of bones like me.”

Little does she fucking know.

“And I don’t like to ask you for one more thing, but honestly, it might be best that you go with me because I still don’t know Cougar that well and what if he says something out of line and ruins Adalade’s chances of impressing Draco?”

“Wouldn’t want that.”

“Think you can be on your best behavior?”

“Depends, what do you need from me?”

She crosses her legs on her counter and says, “Well, someone by my side that acts like a date. There might have to be some touching. Are you okay with touching?”

Fucking yes.

I shrug. “That’s fine. You touch me all the time and I somehow manage.”

She scoffs. “You say that as if it’s torture.”

“I wouldn’t say torture, but pretty damn close to it.”

“You’re going to have to suffer a night of it, so get ready.”

Trust me, I am. Already thinking about all of the goddamn touching.

“And then just be a good conversationalist, which I know you are. I can send you a write-up about Adalade so you know more about her and can help talk up how great she is, especially about her charities.”

“What kind of charities does she work with?”

Bower softly smiles. “Foster care kids.”

“Really?” I ask, feeling my throat grow thick.

“Yes. She’s on the board for a few. I can let you know which ones.”

“Please do, as we might support the same charities.”

“That would actually be pretty amazing.”

“Was she in foster care?”

Bower slowly nods and then gets off the counter. “She was, but it was different back then for her. She doesn’t talk about it much, but I just know she wants to help reshape the system she grew up in and that’s what she focuses on.”

“That’s awesome.” I smooth my hand over my jaw. If there’s one thing I’ve been intentional about, it’s using my income to support those with less. I don’t advertise who I support, as that would just be a dick move—insincere—and seem as though I’m only giving for the kudos.Gabby and I grew up with nothing, and if I can help others not experience such destitution, I will. I wonder if Adalade knows of other places I could support that would help more. “I’d like to get to know her better, too, if that’s all right with you. I’m always looking for people to partner with.”

“Of course, I’m sure she’d love that. Hey, have you ever told Gretchen about the work you do for foster kids and their families?”

I shake my head. “No, that’s not something I want her using to get in the good graces of fans. That’s personal.”

“I get that. You’re right. Sorry I suggested it.”

“Don’t apologize.”
