“Who’s that?”
“The catcher. Kind of surprised Bennett didn’t try to hook you up with him.”
“Oh, um, that’s probably because I didn’t really want to date a baseball player.”
“No?” He lifts a brow. “Why not?”
“Uh, not around enough,” I say. “I guess with football, you don’t travel as much as baseball, and well, it would be nice to have my man around.”
“Your man, huh?” He slowly nods. “I like the sound of that. And you’re right. The baseball travel schedule is hectic and for longer stretches. If you stick with me, babe, I could have you way more nights than any catcher ever could.” He winks. “But Asher Peppers, I could see you two hitting it off.”
“Trying to get rid of me already?” I ask, sipping my drink.
“Just giving you options.”
“Well, then maybe you’ll give me Asher’s number.”
He shakes his head. “No, your fine ass is staying right where it is.”
“Good answer.”
CHAPTER 11
BENNETT
This was the worst fuckingidea I’ve ever had in my entire goddamn existence.
Setting Bower up with someone else, stupid idea.
Setting her up with fucking Cougar Vajeen? It’s a crime.
Jail.
I should be taken to fucking jail right now.
Pacing my living room, I tug on my hair for the hundredth time as I try not to think of every minute they spend together.
Or how she’s probably touching him while she laughs.
Or how he’s probably checking her out…in the dress I zipped for her!
Or how…fuck, how they’ll probably kiss.
He’ll kiss her before I will.
Hell, I’ll probably never kiss her now. I’ll just always wonder what it’s like to be admired by her, but never actually feel it.
Because that’s my life, right? Lonely, pathetic, with no prospect of securing a date with the girl I can’t stop thinking about.
That I haven’t stopped thinking about for years.
“Fuck,” I yell and then flop down on the couch, where my phone is.
I check the time and curse when I see that it’s past ten.
Are they still out?
Did she go home with him?
