“Wow.” I shake my head. “Didn’t think you would stoop that low.”
“Says the guy threatening to date my sixty-six-year-old boss.”
“Age is just a number.”
And I fucking mean that.
“Well, it’s not happening. Keep your willy and your cheese-loving tongue to yourself. My boss is off-limits.”
CHAPTER 20
BOWER
Bennett and Adalade…imagine.
No, I couldn’t.
But just the thought of it, it…triggered something inside me that I didn’t like. Dare I say…jealousy?
I know, I know.
I’m losing my mind. She could be my grandma, and he’s, well, he’s a friend and maybe, maybe the jealousy is because in this scenario, they find love and I don’t, despite trying so hard.
Is that it?
God, I hope so.
Because any other form of jealousy is just not acceptable.
The elevator door dings and Bennett walks me up to my apartment door. When I reach it, I turn toward him, his jacket still draped over my shoulders. “I have cupcakes.”
His eyes light up.
“Really?”
“Yes. Red velvet with cream cheese frosting because I knew you were doing me a favor and I wanted to thank you for it.”
“You chose correctly,” he says with a smirk.
So I unlock my door and we both enter my apartment.
“Am I going to ever get my jacket back, or are you going to keep it?” he asks while I move into the kitchen and grab the cupcakes from the fridge.
“I believe it’s mine now.”
With the cupcakes and napkins in hand, I head toward the couch, where he follows me. I take a seat on one side and he sits directly in the middle right next to me, comfortably, without even thinking about it. He’s been that close all evening, close enough that I could smell his cologne, I could feel his heat, and study every angle of his face.
He takes a cupcake from my hand and peels the wrapper off before taking a huge bite.
“Whoa, that’s quite the bite.”
“You shaming me?” he says around his mouthful.
“No, just surprised is all.” I take a bite of mine but not as large as him.
“You know how I am with sweets.” One more bite and it’s almost gone.
“Well, don’t expect to come over here looking for more because you just devoured—” He shoves the rest of the cupcake in his mouth and then smiles at me. “Oh my God, why are you a child? You’re going to choke.”
