Jo studied me intently as I worked my jaw back and forth, looking away from her.

“I’ve got it,” she said softly as she closed the refrigerator and then walked over to where I was standing.

Her hands brushed up my arms, sending goosebumps across my skin. She reached up and gently caressed my jaw as I felt the emotions bubbling up inside.

“It’s going to be okay, Dom,” she whispered.“I promise.”

I shook my head and sniffled, hating that I was constantly breaking down in front of her.

“I know that this is scary and that you feel like you can’t protect me like this,” she continued.“But, Dom, I don’t need you to do anything but to be here with me.If Tray or his men show up, we will know.”

“And what if we’re too late?”

She chewed her lower lip as a grin spread across her face.

“Trust me, we will know.”

Before she could say more, the doorbell rang.

My head immediately whipped to the door, worried about who was on the other side.

“It’s okay, it’s just my friend Bailey. She’s dropping something off,” Jo said as she walked to the door and opened it.

I wanted to say something, but the words wouldn’t come out.I stared in disbelief as a giant ball of white fluff jumped up and licked her face.

Ilaughed and pulledmy arm out of the way as the Great Pyrenees licked my face.

“Easy, Opal,” I said, rubbing her head as she wiggled excitedly.

I gently pushed her down and stepped to the side to allow Bailey room to enter before Dom closed the door.

“Dom, this is Opal,” I said, kneeling in front of the dog I had fallen in love with the first time I met her.“She is going to stay with us for a few weeks while her mom goes out of town for a work trip.”
