Because yes, I lost my job, and he got free booze. Absolute bullshit if you ask me.

“Talk to me, babe. What’s got you all distracted this morning? You seem nervous,” he asks as he pulls his shirt over his head.

“I’m starting a new job this morning as a housekeeper for some hockey players.” I lick my lips and stare at myself in the mirror, going over all my features.

“Don’t you know those guys? Why are you nervous? Afraid you won’t do the job well?” I give him a frown through the mirror, and he laughs. “You’re right, what am I saying? You’re practically a clean freak. I’m surprised you don’t make me pick up my clothes after sex.”

That makes me smile because I think about it every time. “I would, but I’m too exhausted by the time we’re done to give you any more orders.”

“Nice to know I’m doing my job well.” He grins.

“I wouldn’t keep you around if you weren’t.” This time I’m the one to wink at him.

He laughs and sits on the edge of my bed, head turned my way. “All right, all right. Tell me what’s going on then?”

I sigh and look down at my makeup brushes placed neatly in their little cubicle, the tip of my finger brushing over each. “I don’t know. I mean, yes, you’re right, I do know most of them. I’ve met the whole team a few times, but I don’t personally know all of them. And I wasn’t informed who exactly I will be working for.”

I quickly glance up through the mirror, then look back down. “What if it’s someone I don’t get along with, and this job doesn’t work out?” I let out another breath. “I’m just tired of looking for a new job every other week. I feel like nothing is really made for me.”

Nathan gets up from the bed and comes to stand behind me. Slowly, he brings his hands up to rest on my shoulders and waits for my approving nod to squeeze them slightly. “Who is this woman talking to me? Because she’s not the Ronnie I know.” I smile and roll my eyes.

“You’ll do great, Rons. You’re a kickass girl and anyone would be lucky to have you work for them. And if they turn out to be assholes, just give me their name and address, and I’ll pay them a visit.” He winks, then walks back to the bed to put on his shoes.

“Oh, my hero.” I swivel in my chair and stand, faking awe as I clasp my hands and press them to my chest.

He looks me over, then smirks. “Fuck, you’re sexy. You look like one of those sexy Asian schoolgirls.”

“I have no idea if I should take offense to that or not. I’m Italian, not Asian.”

“I know, but maybe you could learn a few sexy words in Japanese, then we could get into some roleplaying next time I come over.” He looks me up and down, licking his lips.

I swat his arm and head for the door. “You’re an idiot. Come on, I have to get going.”

He stands and follows me out as we walk to the kitchen, where my roommate Aubrey Ford is busy making breakfast. She turns to us with a blushed face and speaks in a delicate, tiny voice. “Morning.”

“Morning, babe,” I say, walking to the fridge and taking out the orange juice.

“Well, I’m out of here. Nice seeing you, Brey. Sorry for any noisy inconvenience. Rons, thank you for breakfast.” He winks with a smirk and heads for the door as I laugh, while Aubrey flushes a darker shade of red.

“Bye, Nathan,” Aubrey and I say in unison as I pour myself a glass and sit down at the island, waiting on Brey’s delicious concoction.

“I’m going to have to invest in some very good earplugs. The ones I have are not doing the job as expected,” she finally says, and I can’t help but laugh.

Aubrey is what you’d consider a prude. Any talk about sex or the opposite gender makes her turn red and uncomfortable, yet she surrounds herself with people who talk about it incessantly. Although I think that’s just the innocent virgin in her that makes her react that way. How she even made it to twenty-three, almosttwenty-four, without even so much as being kissed is beyond me.

She’s a stunning beauty. All natural with long ash-blonde wavy hair and the palest brown eyes I’ve ever seen. When she looks at you, it’s like she can see through your soul. Then there’s the splatter of light freckles over her tiny, upturned nose, with beautiful pillowy lips shaped to perfection.

And her body, God. You know those sexy models you see in magazines with flawless curves and tiny waists? Well, that’s Aubrey. Even her breasts are perfect, not too big and not too small. Just perfect. Jesus, she never even wears makeup. At the charity gala we attended, she went completely bare with a simple green spaghetti strap dress and still looked absolutely stunning.

I’d kill to look like her, but instead I’m skin and bones with my tiny breasts that I hate. I’m not saying I’m ugly. On the contrary, I make heads turn wherever I go. But I don’t have many curves; I’m five-foot-ten with long legs and shoulder-length colorful hair that changes practically every month.

I do have nice symmetrical features, though, tanned golden skin, and dark sapphire-blue eyes. Then there’s my full tatted sleeve and piercings, a few along my ears and a septum.

Such a contrast to the girl I used to be…

I offer her a sheepish smile. “Sorry. We’ll try to keep it down next time.”

“It’s fine. I should be used to hearing those sounds by now. My brother was an expert at creating them.” She scrunches her nose in disgust and places two plated omelets down on the island, then comes to sit at my side as we dig in. “Today’s your first day, right? Do you know whose place you’ll be taking care of?”
